Anyone have a right-handed child who holds a knife in their left hand?

DD is just 7. She is right handed, not just for writing but for everything else, no sign of being ambidextrous in any other area. I've been telling her to hold her knife in her right hand for years, but it's suddenly occurred to me that maybe I'm in the wrong?

It can be sign of dyspraxia

Yes. Four out of my five do and the little one is only 3 so I'm not sure yet.
I also want to hold a guitar the wrong way and we all play the recorder the wrong way round.
Not that we all go around playing recorders but I meant when we were at school Grin

In our house we have

DH - right handed, holds knife in left hand
Me - right handed, holds knife in right hand
DSD1 - right handed, holds knife in left hand
DSD2 - left handed, holds knife in right hand
DS - right handed, changes his mind frequently!

DH says he remembers learning how to use a knife and fork from sitting opposite his grandad so mirror copied him. DSD1 and DSD2 are identical twins which adds to the complication! DSD1 struggles to cut things properly and often tears at food but won't try using her strong (right) hand as she doesn't like using her fork in the left hand. Go figure.

I do this, as does my mum, my mum's brothers, and my nan.

Basically, my nan "taught" us all wrong. But it really doesn't matter. I'm not likely to be invited to dinner with the Queen anytime soon, so I've always figured my cutlery faux pas is pretty much irrelevant.

I do that. I think I'm ambidextrous as I use tin openers left handed. I remember I was using my cutlery "wrong" at school and.Got shouted at by a teacher. Honestly it's like my brain just won't allow me to use a knife in my right hand, at the time I didn't understand how to use my cutlery any other way and I still don't! So please don't try and change your DD - i think it's how some of us are wired like left handed people Smile
