Sure she's unhappy screaming? They do hit a happily screeching phase about 5 months (maybe some hit it when younger).

Not wishing to alarm you at all, but in my very very limited experience therre are two types of high pitched scream.

  1. smiley then suddenly a high pitched and obviously unhappy scream - we took dd to docs and she stayed in hospital for a week.

2)high pitched scream then happy - just an annoying high pitched squeal stage (dd's was at about 4months old).

It sounds like the second. If you have any worries at all just call the out of hours doctor. 16 weeks is very small for leaving a worry until the morning. Better safe than sorry.

many thanks it doesn't seem to be a unhappy scream cos straight after she'll smile and be ok again for a while she seems to do it more if she tired?

My DD is 7mths old and does this all the time - just for the fun of it! Does it more when she is overy tired or frustrated (not crawling yet) but I think it is just a new, but annoying, fun sound to try out

peanutgant - the on;y thing is u can console them with this scream?

If its because she is frustrated then I would change her poistion, give her a different toy etc etc and that usually helps. If its tiredness then a nap or quiet time helps but if she is just doing it for the fun of it then I ignore it Think it is just something they do, my DD isn't distressed just enjoying the sound so doesn't need consolling.
