8 yr old just came downstairs not making sense

My ds has just come downstairs from his bed. He was sick last night and initially said he felt sick and looked a bit upset. He then started saying things that didn't make sense like there's treasure in his school and robbers and the teacher had stole money as he had some in his hand etc. He seemed to know where he was and who we were and I asked him his friends names but he seemed a bit confused. It scared me a bit but he wanted to go back to bed and I think he's fallen asleep again. Could this just be due to a dream? Seems a bit strange that he was wakened and talking like this.

He is going to school although he was sick last night?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/11/2014 09:41

Glad he is ok..but that is a bit Hmm

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 12/11/2014 09:42

Or did you mean he doesn't want to tell the teacher when he goes back in 48 hours? If so..sorry :)

Some nights in our house it's like land of the living dead. Ds1 sleepwalks and talks, dh sleeptalks and ds2 has night terrors and sleep talks. Confused

DeWee · 12/11/2014 11:50

Dh does this too. He says things that would make almost sense, but not quite. The real givaway is that he's terribly vague, which he isn't usually. There's a lot of "yabjar... that sort of ... you bought some...you know what I mean" type of comment. If I'm not too tired it can be very funny getting into conversation with him.

Hi Fanjo
He was sick once on monday so he was off school yesterday but seemed fine to go back today. No diarrhoea or anything so not sure what caused it. He wasnt sick again when he got up last night during this episode, I just thought that was why he got up. I'm still worrying about seizure for some reason as I wouldnt have expected him to have remembered sleepwalking but some of you seem to be saying this is possible. He did a similar thing about 6 months ago when he came downstairs but said he felt wierd and looked very hot and said something about something touching his face but again remembered this i the morning. I'm such a worrier!

Ah I thought he was sick that evening. Sorry. Didn't know they had a 24 hour rule either :)

LaPetiteCoccinelle · 13/11/2014 09:24

When I sleepwalk/sleeptalk I remember vague things about it. Often they are part of my dream.

Once I dreamt I was running round in circles round a wall, with a cape. Turns out I was walking round our house in circles with my duvet clutched round me!

i have also attacked DH in my sleep. I was dreaming that I was being buried alive Hmm so I started kicking and punching to get out of the hole. He woke with a start and threw me to the floor cos he was half asleep (thought I was a burglar! Grin). The weird thing is that at the time I was dreaming but a part of me also realised I was in bed. So I have a memory of the sleepwalking and a memory of the dream.

In fact, the worst sleepwalking experiences I have had is when I have no memory of the dream and no vague memory of sleepwalking. I once woke up in the middle of a campsite at 3am. I had no idea where I was or how I'd gotten there.

Oh and that's just reminded me of the time I had a nap, my flatmate's friend came round and I stood there talking to them making no sense and suddenly I woke up. I freaked out and so did they cos I had been making no sense whatsoever then suddenly said "where Am I?" Smile

I sleepwalked once when I was about your son's age. I remembered it vividly and can even remember it now. I was talking and walking and everything. It was brought on by anxiety.

DontWannaBeObamasElf · 13/11/2014 23:13

When I was that age I was sent home from school with a migraine, I was vomiting and all sorts.

I remember lying in bed and reaching out and grabbing onto something very large, I could feel it in my hands but there was nothing there. I then went down to my mum and said "mum, it's in the room, it's like that held hands up like a Lego man."

It never happened again so it was put down to being poorly.

I wasn't sleepwalking, I was wide awake.

Pico2 · 13/11/2014 23:23

I used to get this, particularly if I had a fever. I distinctly remember going in to tell my Dad that he had to turn every atom in the universe round when I had flu. So I think remembering it is normal.

InvaderZim · 14/11/2014 11:17

DontWannaBe, that sounds like a hypnopompic hallucination - I get them with semi-frequent regularity. They often take the form of something else being in the bed/room, and I can really see them - sometimes for several minutes at a go, but it's better now/they go quicker since that I realise I'm just hallucinating.

InvaderZim · 14/11/2014 11:18

That is to say, I'm properly awake during these episodes.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 14/11/2014 11:27

Just sleepwalking, seriously, don't worry!

I wonder why even after so many people recognising this as sleepwalking, do you still think its a seizure of some kind? It's quite a leap surely? For me that's the most unusual thing on this thread, not your sins behaviour, which really does seem like typical sleep walking. Is there a reason why it's got you so concerned?

We're just random people on the Internet so can't ever be 100% sure, so if you are still very anxious about it, maybe going to your gp is a good idea?

UngratefulMoo · 16/11/2014 08:55

I sleepwalked and talked into my teens. Answered the phone in my sleep once and woke up half way through the conversation.

My sister used to wake up in the middle of the night to find me standing by her bed staring at her - used to freak her right out!

furryleopard · 17/11/2014 14:06

I remember having a conversation with my Dad on the landing outside my bedroom about a 'thing' I wanted for my bike. I couldn't describe what it was and my Dad was very bemused and put me back to bed.

My DH does it now that we have a newborn and he's tired. The other night he sat up and said "ummmjubbum DD in her cot?" I was like I'm feeding her now, "does she ummmblumgfd in her cot?" I ended up telling him to go back to sleep as he was making no sense and it wasn't even fun to keep him talking!

I remember my DS doing it when he was doing his 11+ entrance exams. He is quite laid back and I assumed it was "Repressed Stress Trying to Get Out" etc.

I posted on here and googled and interestingly I remember that stress was not thought to be a significant trigger. I also remember it peaked in children aged between something like 8-15, was more common in boys than girls and seemed to have a hereditary element (I did it). We were so bang in the middle of all of those that I felt very reassured.

I think the only thing you have to be a bit careful of is disorientation etc. Ds came up a flight of stairs from his room to ours; stood in our room having a long nonsensical chat and got into bed with us. After a bit we tried to get him back into his own bed but he had no idea that he wasn't in his own bed and was fairly resistant to the idea of being moved.
