Over affectionate 6 yr old. How can I stop her cuddlin/squashing other children?

DD2 is a very tactile, cuddly girl. This is mostly a good thing, but she cuddles other children at school, who just don't want to be cuddled!. I always stop her when I see her doing it, and she gets very upset if actually told off.
How can I help her understand that she should at the very least ask before cuddling other people?

Hi Jas, have you tried explaining to her about personal space? a thing we did with ss, who is also rather ott with the hugs (or was at 6/7, he's grown out of it now a bit) was to do the personal space thing, by getting him and dd1 to stand next too each other, and put their arms out/swing round (made it fun!) and then we did the talk about asking the other person nicely if you wanted to stand closer/give a hug, whilst explaining that standing inside this space, particularly as ss was getting older can upset people ie people get ratty in crowds etc HTH's

I'm trying, but it's not really sinking in. Thanks for answering, though

I'll have another talk to her later (she made another girl cry this morning by cuddling her,and doesn't seem to understand that something meant nicely can be received as something different)

Hi jas, my ds is also 6 yrs old and he's always been like this. The only thing I can say is that it's improved over time - he still hugs his mates at school sometimes and is very tactile with them, but they do tend to tell him to 'back off' (in a nice way ) if they're not in the mood for it. I used to get a little bit concerned about it but he seems to have learnt that not all kids appreciate this kind of closeness! I wouldn't worry too much, try to reinforce the personal space thing and my feeling is that she will grow out of it over time, particularly if other kids react negatively towards it.

I love seeing my boy and his little friends hugging each other though, it's so lovely
