What can your 16 month old do?

DD1 walked really late due to hypermobility and talked early (I think)... So I was trying not to be worried about DD2 but I can't help it.

She bum shuffles and pulls up sometimes but doesn't walk. She cruises around furniture but only on tiptoes.

She doesn't hold her bottle... And screams if I try to make her.

She doesn't play with shape sorters. Just bangs things together and throws them.

She says 'no' and 'ta', but hardly ever and no other words. Lots of babbling but not even mum or dad...

What can your chikdren do at this age? Should I be worried?

(I wasn't, but then I found a video of my older DD at 16 months pointing out colours and shapes and I'm panicked!)

DS is now 22 months and didn't speak a single word until he was 16.5mo. Now I can't shut him up!!

He walked early (12mo) but has only just mastered shape sorters now. Cruising around furniture sounds promising I am sure she is nearly there (my friends little girl bum shuffled until 18mo - no hyper mobility issues she just didn't fancy walking).

I think there's a huge range of 'normal' and your dd certainly sounds like many of my friends kids but maybe call your HV for advice if you're worried?

Agree with pp see hv if your concerned

I've had dc Walk at 12 months, dc Walk at 14 months

I've had dc talk in full sentences at 15 months and dc only say a handful of words at nearly two Years old

Dd is 18 months
She Walked at 14
She can say quite a lot of words, complete simple puzzles and shape sorters, she knows two colours

At 16 months DS1 had been walking for almost 5 months, but he didn't really say anything (until he was well over 2 really). I doubt he played with shape sorters either! He didn't have a bottle but he could drink from a cup and spoon feed himself.

Waves curiousgeorgie I've had a name change but I think we were on the same antenatal thread. My DS can do some of the things you mention easily, some not so easily and some not at all. I bet there are things your dd could do that he can't. Honestly, if you're really stressing see the HV. I really believe that being a pest and putting your mind at rest is the best thing to do. But I also believe that dc develop at different rates in different things and comparing just won't help. Get DD checked (for you, not because I think she needs it!) - they are growing so fast don't spend the time fretting.

I’m a FTM to a 16 month old and by means an expert but based on what I’ve seen from my own and my friends children I don’t think you should be concerned. My DD walked at around 12 months after a few months of shuffling and cruising, she has 4 words but only 2 in English, the other words in DP’s native language.

She cannot point out colours or shapes - your older DD sounds advanced!. She generally refused to hold a cup or bottle before she was 12 months (became a bottle refuser at 4 months and so was EBF until I went back to work) despite my following lots of ‘expert’ advice and buying expensive specialist cups. Wise MNetters advised me not to worry and when she started going to her childminder she picked up a cup within 2 days using a cup the CM purchased from a pound shop Blush

She can point to 3 or 4 body parts and follow a few basic instructions (“go and get your shoes”, “where’s teddy”?) However I looked at a site recently that listed ‘milestones’ for 16 month olds. DD is not doing half the things listed but as mentioned up-thread they change/develop so quickly I’m not worried.

Go and see your GP to put your mind at rest Smile

Bite and tantrum.

My 15.5 month old has only just started walking. No real words though babbles a lot. Can hold a bottle but only when lying down.

Lovelydiscusfish · 29/10/2014 19:28

My dd only started walking at 15.5 months, and at 16 months as far as I can remember could only say a handful of things - language explosion happened a couple of months later. She's always been shit at shape sorters -probably would be now if I hadn't given our last one away to a friend who is pregnant! But now, at 2 and a half, she speaks fluently with a very wide vocabulary, recognises most letters, can run, jump, dance, dribble a football etc. I don't think being slightly later than others to do things is any indication they'll struggle in the long term. What you describe sounds entirely normal to me!
