my ds can nearly climb out of his cot and if he tried hard, he definately would be able to. Shall i start thinking about changing his cot to bed or wait until he knows he can do it and has actually climbed out? he is 21 months and i didn't really want to put him in his bed for a good few months yet

Have you lowered it as far down as possible? I would probably wait until he actually does it.
All mine were still in a cot till at least 2 and dd4 was 2.5 before she went in a bed.

yeah its as low as it will go. He doesn't realise he can do it yet but once he has done it once he is bound to keep doing it

True but it could take another 6 months before he realises

DONT DO IT until you absolutely have to. dd is 2.4 and has just managed to climb out. bedtimes and mornings arent what they used to be

I was loathe to let my daughter out of the cot for as long as possible, so the trick I used was to put baby sleeping bag on back to front (zip at the back) so she couldn't undo it, therefore couldn't get out of the cot. She started sleeping in a big bed about 2 months ago (age 2.7 then) and so far, fingers crossed, she has been great. Is even happy to have daytime nap in the bed.

When I was ready to do the transition, (she had been pestering me about sleeping in the bed as it has been in the room for a while) I kept the cot assembled and ready to sleep in, and any time she tried any monkey business, I put her back in the cot and in the sleeping bag. She soon got the message.
