Hi all

My son has recently been diagnosed with Autism. I have been told that he is eligible for DLA, I wasn't too keen to apply but having got a diagnosis , this money will help towards therapy which is so expensive.

Wanted to ask if any one has managed to get mobility component for their child with autism aged 2 ish. Is there a age restriction?

Thanks x

No, low rate mobility is from age five, high rate from age three.

Also high rate is very unlikely to be awarded even after age five unless your ds also has severe learning difficulties.
Apply to Caudwell children they help with up to £2000 funding for ABA.

I think you can apply for the care component but not the mobility component at that age. On the basis it's hard to show how a 22 month old with autism needs more help with mobility than another 22 year old. Have a good look on thd 'net. I don't think you'll have much trouble with the care component. I'm surprised he got such a firm dx so early.

Oh ok thanks a lot , at least I'm clear on what he can get now

Sorry I meant high rate is unlikely to be awarded even after age three. He will most likely qualify for low rate when he is older.

You can apply from 3. Even if he doesn't have specific mobility issues you can get it if your son meets the criteria for severe mental impairement.

My son (3) is not autistic but he does have hypermobility and uses a wheelchair both for his HMS and for his own safety (he is globally delayed and on a children's GQ centile - IQ for children, he is classed as mentally retarded). He does not yet receive mobility but we are applying for it.

Dd severe asd got high rate mobility from age 3 - still needed lots of encouragement to walk then. Currently appealing refusal to renew - expect once dwp have pit us thru our paces we'll get it again criteria w add are severe mental impairment and disruptive behaviour. Apply.
