hi i have a 3yo dd, dont really.know how to explain but she has some tendencies that have been picked up by a family member and friend who have worked with children who need more educational help and so on. she very often blocks her ears, isnt particularly sociable with other children and seems to be quite ignorant ! Hmm any thoughts please ?!

How do you mean "ignnorant"? How is her speech?

chdmum2491 · 20/10/2014 11:08

sometimes if i call her she wont even acknowledge me, but other times shouts what! as in what do.you want, and other times yes mummy, her speech is not great you can ask her questions and she will answer sometimes or have a mini conversation but sometimes just speaks her own little language !

Does she re-run lines from tv or films or books?

chdmum2491 · 20/10/2014 11:16

yes

Meant to add try this questionaire it is called the Mchat test and it's a very good indicator if you should seek more advice. The GP would be your best port of call if it comes out that you do need some assessment.x

Well the best thing is definitely to speak to your doctor...you don't have to take her with you. Or tell your health visitor that she needs assessing. Have you seen the Health Visitor lately? How did dd do on her 2 year check?

BlueberryWafer · 20/10/2014 11:32

You sure it's not her hearing? Has she had a hearing test?

chdmum2491 · 20/10/2014 11:44

jus concerned about speech at 2 year check bu they did 3 year check an she had improved vastly but shes still a bit behind i think, i was told when she was a baby that she may have some learning difficulties as she has.congenital heart defects and it sometimes affects them in those ways id.dont think.its her hearing as she hears when i whisper to her lol its all confusing Confused

Ah. You definitely need to get an assessment....the heart issues could conceivable have slowed her down a little bit and she might benefit from speech therapy. Go to GP asap to set your mind at rest. It's VERY worrying when our DC don't do as we expect I know. I've been there too. Flowers

im not so worried about her speech as its coming along well just slowly, its.more of if she does have slight autistic tendencies id rather know an let her.teachers know so something can be set in place Smile

Speech therapy can help with that too....because it's partly an understanding issue. Autistic children often can't decode the language in the same way as others...so speech therapy helps them in different ways to a child who is simply delayed for instance.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 20/10/2014 12:38

Also, you'd be asking the GP for an assessment for Autism which often means that speech therapy is part and parcel of the assessment journey.x
