Toddler not well. Any ideas what could help?

My 15 month has got a bad cold. Since Sunday he has barely slept and has been refusing food, dummies and milk. He no longer has a temperature but is so unhappy. I don't know what to do to help him. I don't think his nose is blocked.

He has been ill a lot lately due to starting nursery 4 months ago but he has never ever refused food or a dummy. He is a great eater.

I am wondering if it could be something hurting him in his mouth / throat?

Any ideas? Don't want to take him to the doctors for a cold but am getting a bit worried.

To solve colds I find vics on the bottom of my DSs feet (put socks on so he can't wipe it off and get in his eyes) or an Olbas plug significantly helps. Anything sweet to keep energy up - my healthy option is honey and porridge (honey is good for throat) and if he's really struggling a bit of chocolate (which is a good indicator as to when appetite will come back). Very warm baths with lots of toys cheer him up. If I can get garlic into his diet I will. I think your DC is too young for flu jab, but maybe ask? Other than that Calpol. There's been a lot of bugs in nusery recently! I found getting a kids anti-bac gel good.

Thank you. I will try that. He has been poorly more than half the time since he has been to nursery. Has missed about 1/3 of the paid nursery days but as he is also home on Thursday and Friday, he seems to catch bugs at the start of the week, suffer through Thursday / Friday and the weekend then be better in time to go catch another bug....

That's a lot of days...is the nursery sending him home for a cold?!

I'd probably err on the side of caution and book a doctors appointment for him. My GP's never mind seeing worried parents and it sounds as if he could have tonsillitis or something especially if he's not drinking as well.

Hope he's better soon.

If he's not drinking then definitely see the doctor as dehydration is a risk. As for nursery, when ds started aged two he was ill for six months on and off so although annoying I think it's fairly standard.

Hope he feels better soon. If you can get him to drink some milk then mayb try ibuprofen in case his throat is swollen?
