How many words at 15 months?

Just that really.

Friend said 20 and that worried me. DD has less than 10 i would say, although understands basic instructions and is learning new words fast in my opinion

I wouldn't worry if that was my baby at all. Plenty of babies can only say mama and Dada at that age. Plenty.

AGnu · 11/10/2014 23:46

My 16mo says: Mama, Dadad, peepo, ey-oh hello, buh-bye, dih-dih-dih tickle, dah or dah-doo thank you, uh-oh I've thrown my food on the floor again & a friend's name. I have no concerns about his development. Smile

StepDoor · 12/10/2014 00:08

DS had about 5 at that age.

winkywinkola · 12/10/2014 00:43

I think ds3 (aged 2 now) could only say wow.

I wouldn't worry about words at this age. It's meaningless. One or two or twenty.

Worry when they're silent at 3. Seriously.

ALL children do things at different times.

winkywinkola · 12/10/2014 00:44

And don't engage with competitive parents who are counting words and fostering comparisons with other children. Because it's nonsense.

Didn't start noticing distinct words till 18 months. Can't shut 'em up now!

Chipandspuds · 13/10/2014 15:10

As long as you can see they understand what you're saying I wouldn't worry! I think DS was just saying Dada at that age, then started learning a new word or two a day from 26 months, now he doesn't stop !

Fcukfifa · 13/10/2014 15:12

My ds is 19 months and all he says is hiya and dad, dad isn't usually in context either.

I describe him as mysterious Hmm

jimblejambles · 13/10/2014 15:13

Dd is 17 months she says beh or buh for everything. She can however roar like a dinosaur on command Smile
I am not worried ds2 didn't say anything until he was 2 and can talk for England now

BaffledSomeMore · 13/10/2014 15:19

At 15 months ds had precisely 0 words. Nada. Nil.
Nothing wrong with the boy at all.
Conversely dd was using sentences at that age.

BertieBotts · 13/10/2014 15:22

20 is loads! More often between 1 and 10 I'd say.

EssexMummy123 · 13/10/2014 22:13

one :-)

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 13/10/2014 22:15

I remember the HV telling me they look for 6-10 words at 18 mo. So your lo sounds back on track to me Smile

Angelface5 · 13/10/2014 23:05

My dd can only say mama dada and bye. She is nearly 18 months but she understands everything, if you give her something to do she runs straight off to do it.
Like everyone else said it's not long before they go from saying not a lot to them not stopping. It's lovely.

knitaholic · 13/10/2014 23:12

My ds can only say about 10 words and he's 20 months, but he makes himself perfectly understood!!!! I really wouldn't worry unless you feel he isn't understanding you or able to communicate his needs (remember he is a toddler and his needs change by the second!!!).

mrsspagbol · 14/10/2014 08:20

No I wasn't worried at all (prior to friend's comments) and I don't generally like to obsess or benchmark, especially since she turned 1 and I don't get those daily developmental emails anymore Grin.

Precisely because I hadn't been googling endlessly recently, and because the number seemed so large, I thought I'd better check with the wisdom that is MN!

My son barely said anything at that age, but he would watch people very intently. He's almost 3 now and never shuts up. When he did start speaking, he was very clear in what he was saying and progressed very quickly. We joked that it was almost like he was storing it all up and didn't think there was much point talking before!

NorrisCole · 14/10/2014 11:52

My Dd is 15 months and says mummy daddy, Hiya and no.

No seems to be her favourite word at the moment Hmm

freshlysharpenedpencils · 14/10/2014 11:55

mine is 18 months and can only say mamma and dadda - a sound that sounds a tad like grandma and almost makka pakka. I wouldn't worry about other people's claims - someone I 'know' (not well) claimed her 6 month old was commenting on the weather. I shit you not.

My DD had a few words at that age but now talks non-stop, even in her flippin sleep! DS is 15 months and had loads of words, a new one a day, but thankfully doesn't seem to just talk relentlessly all day long yet Grin. It means nothing IMO, as another poster said, worry if they're 2.5 and up and not saying anything much (then regret the speech therapy two years after that when they never shut up!)

Davsmum · 14/10/2014 14:16

I would stop counting.
There are babies who have lots of words at 12 months and some who have only a couple at 24 months.
Talking, crawling, walking - none of these are competitions.

So long as your child is engaging with you and understanding you and there are no concerns about her hearing - I would say it is far too early to worry about lack of vocabulary.

My brothers little boy was only saying 2 clear words at age 2 and a half...and neither was 'Mummy' !
