Newborn in screaming pain

My six week old has been quite windy from the start, Very wriggly but mostly didn't seem too bothered by it. It often woke her from naps in the day though. Tried infacol and it really worked.

Out of the blue it has gotten much worse. She sleeps an ok stretch in the first part of the night and then is squirming and crying for the rest of it.

Today she has cried with it all day.

My son was like this as well (although much worse). But he had it from the start so it feels confusing that this has started to get bad now. Could it be something I'm eating? The way I BF? Ie positioning? I did no infacol all day weds because I forgot it but surely that can't be it!?

Has she been checked for tongue tie? Posterior TT in particular can get worse as they get bigger, also they get less sleepy at 5/6 weeks so she may find it harder to sleep through the wind - and more vocal by that age too.

if your son had it too that also points to TT as it runs in families.

Tongue tie, CMPI or silent reflux?

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/10/2014 09:21

Was going to suggest you got her checked for tongue tie too.

Have you got a Bfing Support group you can get to? Alternatively, I'd give one of the Bfing Helplines a call. Have you got the numbers?

Have you got a sling? Sometimes sticking them in a sling and walking around can help them to settle. I doubt it is anything to do with your bfing, it might be worth trying a different position, if you want to. Have a look hereSmile

Forgot to add the link about tongue tie. Have a read and see if any of the symptoms sound familiar.

Graterater · 07/10/2014 17:42

Thank you do much everyone. I think tongue tie looks really likely. She has a lot of the symptoms on that list. I did ask them to check at hospital as was worried about this but I have heard it is often hard to diagonse/isn't spotted. What's my best route for getting it diagnosed? GP or BF specialist.

On the tt link there is a link to lactation consultants. Have a look to see if there is one in your area. Alternatively, you could contact milk matters, their phone number is in the link. Failing that, come back and someone might be able to give you more info Smile

Lactation consultant/BFing specialist. Or you might persuade your GP to refer you to a hospital TT clinic, but there can be a wait Sad

Most GPS, HVs, and hospital staff aren't properly trained to spot tts especially posterior ones which are less obvious to the eye.

Annoyingly it's an area where the NHS is a bit crap.

How are you both getting on today Grater?
