Why is my toddler screaming at night?

DS (16 months) is fine in the day.

For the past few nights he has been waking up absolutely screaming the place down. Gave him calpol, still screaming. However once I get him out of bed and playing, then he is fine. When bought back to bed, screaming starts again.

What could it be? I thought it was teething initially but I'm not so sure now ...

Night terrors? Or, if he's actually scared of something in the room, Is he able to say, at all, what might be scaring him? If not, and if his room is dark, might a light-night help?
Good luck - sounds distressing for both of you!

Lovely, thanks! He sleeps with us so I'm not sure he is scared. But tonight I might keep the lamp on and see if he reacts differently.

I'd guess molars

Chocolate, his molars are coming put but I'm not sure if that's what's causing the pain (and why only at night?!). They are half out (the front bit of the tooth) but not the back bit. Any idea how long it takes for all of it to cut through?

Probably not scared, if he's in with you. Could be the teeth? Dd's tooth pain always seemed worse at night- don't know why. Maybe less other stuff to distract them?

dinkystinky · 04/10/2014 22:40

Molars I reckon, ds3 has had molars cutting and has been crapola with sleep too. Takes a good couple of weeks to fully cut and often come in pairs...

Couple of weeks?! Oh no Shock

What did you all do? Did you give calpol before bed, or wait to see if they woke up?

Try baby nurofen instead of calpol? I found it more effective with teething pain.

Get to bed as early as possible and ride it out.

Infant nurofen, anbesol teething ointment, teething granules and calgel are permanent fixtures in the bedroom too!

This happens with my dd too who is 16mo . My guess with her is molars .. It's being going on since the start of August !

Like you once I go and get her she's fine but there's definitely something waking her up . I second calpol .. Seems to get her back to sleep relatively quickly .

Good luck !!
