Toddler hates going into shops

My 16 month old DS has developed a huge dislike of shops. I had to do abit of shopping on the high street this morning and he was fine being pushed in his pushchair outside but as soon as I walked into a shop he would start sobbing his heart out!

Does anyone have any experience of this? I'm hoping it's just a phase but think I will have to resort to online shopping moving forwards!!

I sympathise with your DS, I also feel like crying when I have to go shopping!

My dd (2.4) hates going into tesco. Not all tesco stores, just one. Has done for about a year. No idea why! I just make sure I'm quick, and have snacks to pacify her with Smile

My DS at the same age does this too, but I think it's because the pushchair isn't being pushed at a steady pace and he gets bored. I usually give him a snack as soon as we get into the shop, so he is busy with that for a while, until he starts crying again.

GothicRainbow · 03/10/2014 12:55

I'm glad it's not just me! I think you might be right about the pushchair not moving at a steady pace - his boredom threshold is zero!

I think the worst thing was the on going commentary from others 'ooh someone's grumpy' Hmm Umm yeh no need to point out the bleedin' obvious!

my ds is 5 and has always disliked shops. I think it is to do with the noise and lack of space. I had a lot of problems shopping when he was younger. He is better now, but I make sure I go to shops that are not too busy and have more space. The sainsburys in our area has much wider aisles than the other supermarkets. Ds is much happier in there than the other supermarkets. He also hates cinemas and theatres. Too much noise and too many people.

Ds aged 2.5 is the same.

I usually let him run about the park for an hour first and then bribe him back in the buggy to the shops with snacks.

My DS started doing this last month. He's 22 months. We were in the Trafford Centre, and he was absolutely fine until we got to the threshold of the shop. Literally the threshold, it was quite weird. I tested him out in multiple shops Grin as I thought it was quite odd.

No solution I'm afraid, as he is still doing it, although I thought he had stopped last week when we were in Next. But no, he had just fallen to sleep Hmm. At 6pm. Arghhhh!

Hope someone else comes along with a solution! As I quite like shopping now and then!

PurplePidjin · 05/10/2014 19:27

Mine can't cope with Morrisons or Home Bargains. I think it's the lighting? Or possibly the echoiness?

I tie him down. Much the best way Wink

DS also has zero tolerance for not getting his own way. So I tend to just ignore him when he starts now. I'm hoping he will realise that he isn't going to get his own way on this one.

It's not like we go to shops much!

Sadly, I'm sure other shoppers hate me. I'm developing a thicker skin to what other people think. I don't think there is any other solution if I'm honest?!

TheDetective · 05/10/2014 19:29

Pidj O refuses to be slinged any more. Well not so much as refuses, but makes my life body a living hell if I try.

Waaaaah!

GothicRainbow · 09/10/2014 16:52

Sigh just posted a reply to you all and it's only gone and disappeared Hmm

Basically in a nut shell I said that I gave using my ring sling a go and we had a bit of an improvement - not happy but not screaming the place down just grumbling so that's something at least!!

My toddler has also started doing this! I literally have no reason why, any shop not just a particular one. He also does it if I am visiting some where he has been before and knows hes going in doors. He will make a fuss and cry. He is being assessed by professionals about his development and speach and as he is non verbal struggling with communication... he is 2years 4months

AladdinMum · 26/01/2021 00:11

If he is already under developmental observation (i.e. concerns about his development have already been raised) It could be a sensory issue - he could be finding the lights/sounds/smells/etc inside the shops overwhelming.
