Baby rice

Hi everyone

My little man is eight weeks old and definitely a hungry baby. Out of curiosity how old are babies when they can have baby rice? I have looked online and there are loads of different ages!

Any advice is greatly appreciated xx

It's not advised until 6 months. I've heard of exceptional circumstances where people have fed at 4 months. I would speak to your health advisor. Are you breast feeding or formula. It may just be a growth spurt in which case if you're breast feeding your supply should catch up with your dc.

I've had days where I feel like I'm not giving my dc enough but it's just their way of preparing for a growth spurt.

I think 17 weeks is the bare minimum but the recommendation is 6 months.

baby rice is completely void of nutrition. You're best off waiting until he is old enough and giving him real food.

here are the NHS guidelines. This is what your health visitor would advise (Hopefully)

please don't give an 8 week old baby rice :(

17 weeks is the bare minimum. Closer to 6 months is generally better.

If an 8 week old is hungry he needs more milk, not baby rice. How would you even get a spoon in his mouth at this point, aside from all the reasons it would be really bad for his system.

But I also agree that baby rice is a bit of a pointless product. Wait until he's ready to wean then give him nice food. Smile

I started my hungry wee lad on baby rice at just around 6 months, I think yours is a bit little at the moment. Must be needing more milk, so stick with that for now :)

My local HV team do weaning talks quite regularly where you can get up to date information. Maybe ask at your local family centre and see if they do the same.

As others have said, 17 weeks is the very youngest you can give solids. Nearer to 6 months is more appropriate, and if you wait till 6 months you can go straight to offering all foods (except honey), just mashed rather than pureed. You can even do baby led weaning, which is where you let your baby completely self feed using their hands.

Baby rice is very bland and contains less nutrients than formula. It might make a baby feel full but it won't be helping them grow and develop like breastmilk (or formula) would.

Thanks for all your advice.

I thought it would be around six month mark, I was just curious. But yes seems to make sense that he might has well something nutritional instead of rice.

Thanks again
