My Dd is 2 and today ive noticed she keeps stuttering, she never has before.

Its different to the way she normally speaks.
She always asks "why?" and today its "w,w,w,why?" iykwim. she is doing it on lots of words too.

I was wondering how a stutter comes about? would it be in just a day like this? or would it be a thing that developed over time?
I dont want to be a neurotic mother and worry for nothing!!

Hi there

I spoke to speech therapist about this last week as my DP had a really noticable stammer!
She said most kids stammer at some point! Its only if its noticable and regular by the age of 5 that a referral for investigations would even be considered!
It sounds like you dont need to woory to me
And even if she does stammer it shouldnt effect her life! My DP is a staff nurse and nothing about stammering bothers him
Hope this helps

My younger daughter stammered for a few months when she was 2. It started when we moved house and she went to a new nursery, got quite bad at one point and stopped gradually over the following year. We were referred to a speech therapist but by the time we saw her it was a lot better so we only saw her once. She said a stammer can start following a big change, and/or at an age where their brains can go faster than their mouths and they can't get the words out fast enough! There's probably more to it than that but that's basically what I remember.

Don't worry about it, it's likely to sort itself out. Maybe you could ask for a referral in case it needs attention later and there's a long wait? My daughter got very cross and frustrated with it so I was glad to be able to tell her that we were going to see someone.

Good luck.
