My 6 year old has been rolling his eyes to the side for a few days. He is now dipping his head a little too. It's almost like a nervous tic. It seems to be when he is concentrating on something, particularly reading or building his lego.
I was diagnosed with bowel cancer on the first day of the summer holidays and although I plan on making a full recovery, I know he has been worried about me as I had to have surgery and will be starting a six month chemo regime next month.
He is displaying all the behaviours explained on the Macmillan site, anger, inability to concentrate at school etc. We have spoken to his teacher and they are keeping a close eye on him. I'm unsure about this tic though. Should I perhaps talk to the school nurse? Has anybody else had a child with this?

My ds is now 7 as has been through various tics. There was a complex one aged around 4 when things were a bit stressful for him which involved touched each ear to the shoulder then flattening his hair at the front. Next was a throat clearing tic that went on for a good 18 months. That was annoying. Now we are onto picking at the base of his finger and toe nails. From what I have read on here it's all normal stuff. Have a search for tics and a good read and put your mind at rest. It's just how some kids cope with stress. I have had no professional input but between us Ds and I discovered that having something to fiddle with helps eg he keeps a small collection of pebbles in his pocket! I believe the best thing to do is essentially ignore it

So sorry about your illness, I hope you have a quick recovery

Haha, your name made me laugh! Where does she find a hairdresser that would do that in this day and age?
Thanks for posting. I know he must be stressed. He's been through such a lot. I'll try to keep him occupied and I won't make a big deal about it.

Hi, just wanted to add my experience. My son turned 5 in April this year and has had blinking/squinting tics since he turned 4 in 2013. Recently added in a slight noise in the back of his throat which I can't really describe. He tics mainly when idle and loads when watching TV. He doesn't seem stressed, but then I don't think kids know they are...it possibly manifests in these behaviours. My reading suggests stress doesn't 'cause' tics, but can greatly increase them/trigger them more. We have been told to ignore them as much as possible, as if the child focusses on them it can make them worse. Hopefully it will just be a passing phase
