Toilet training - Hypermobility/low muscle tone/immature pencil grip

My daughter is 6.

She was premature and was late with many developmental milestones, she is a bright child.

She took a long time to become dry at night.

She likes to be independent but often after she's been to the toilet she will leave poo on the toilet seat or on her hands or the toilet roll or the side of the bath, clothes etc.

She smells of poo sometimes. She tries to clean up rather than tell us and ends up smearing poo everywhere.

I was advised to just let her practice and that she would get better but I'm not seeing an improvement.

I don't really know what to try next.

I'm busy for a few hours now so will be back later. Any advice would be welcome.

A friend has a daughter with similar issues and she in now year 8 and unable to wipe her own bottom. Her mum took over wiping her bottom for her as it was quicker and less mess.

Hi, my 8 year old has hypermobility and ASD, she will not wipe her bum and often gets poo on her hands and wee's on the toilet seat, the only thing that works for us I'd picture prompts, we put them on the wall by the toilet at home and they tell her what to do in order from 'pulling pants down' to washing your hands', she doesn't always take notice of these and will do her own thing when she's in a hurry ( leaving me to clean up and call her back to wipe her bottom and wash her hands ).

Thanks Marne2.

We don't have a diagnosis but I have suspicions. We haven't had much progress with the health centre and I feel a bit sick of the sight of the place.

Every appointment disrupts her school day and I don't find them very helpful most of the time. I think I will need to make another appointment though about this.

I will try writing a list of instructions with pictures and see if they help.

Good point about the wiping. Poltergoose. We need to concentrate on the wiping action, I think.

We have mirrors in the bathroom and my daughter is supposed to watch herself as she washes her face. She has low muscle tone around her mouth and used to drool. She still dribbles sometimes. Food gets everywhere.

She has had a cold recently; snot ended up everywhere. We try to encourage her to pinch the snot and wipe downwards. She just smears it everywhere.

My Dd3 was around 8 when she started wiping her own bottom, she has similar dx'es to polters Ds.

She can only really manage with wipes but again she only poos at home so it is not so difficult to be prepared.

I agree with marne about the visuals, they work really well with a LO I work with again with similar dx's.

Good luck Smile
