Dd is Yr 1 and just turned 5 (summer born) since pre school I had it flagged in my mind about her speech being behind her peers but teachers passed it off as 'she's only young' and "it'll come" along with "She IS very dreamy etc"
In Yr R at her first PT Evening her teacher did ask if she had a hearing problem perhaps and suggested a test or her eyes as she found it (DD) hard to concentrate. Before she started Yr R I did take her for an eye test where she read out all the letters of the test happily and optician had no concerns. She had the hearing test and was cleared.
School asked if she could be assessed for a Speech and Language delay.
This scares me they'll find something "wrong" with her
but I know something IS there as she is behind her peers. She can read basic level books now etc and I'm not to fussed at that as it'll click when it's ready. Her language and understanding IS behind, and I'm worrying about her future.
School has said it can take up to 9 months for the assessment to happen (doesn't help it's an out of catchment school and into the border for the next county) consequently they have had to apply to our county for the assessment and speaking to the schools SENCO today it can take a while as our home county (not the one the school is in IYSWIM) is not known to be efficient.
Is there anywhere I can find more literature for this ? So I can help DD ? We read each night anyway but I'm worried about doing to much extra curricular for writing and maths etc in case it's overload for her. Socially she's a confident girl but has no friends yet really. I'd say her speech is that of a 'normal' 3 year old and I can't help but being scared for her future :(
