The bars are off the cot bed: & he keeps falling out!

DS (2) has just, this last weekend, had the bars taken off his cotbed. He's very proud to now be sleeping in a big bed, and loving the independence it's bringing him.

The trouble is, every night, for the last four nights (the number of nights he's been in it) he has fallen out in his sleep. He falls onto a pillow, and it's low to the ground - but obviously it's not ideal. And the thump is quite disconcerting for us.

We are trying to train him so when we visit people he can sleep in a regular bed, so are reluctant to put a safety bar on as he's in no danger in his bed, but may be elsewhere where beds are higher, and it won't teach him to stay in.

Will this just settle over time? Any tips or should we change something? Thanks!

Marking my place! Sorry op I don't have any advice, but thinking of turning cot into bed for my ds too. Can't imagine for a minute that he won't be falling out at least twice a night!

HenriettaTurkey · 09/09/2014 22:49

He's completely oblivious to it but I have no idea how long it'll last for!

All the best!

They do get better at it. We did use a bed guard, just for a couple of weeks while DS1 got used to the idea of no sides. after that we had an old duvet on the floor for a week or two but he soon got the idea. It really doesn't take long for them to retrain their bodies.

You need these: www.magicbumpers.com, they're great. And fairly portable too if you ever need them away from home.

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 09/09/2014 22:51

Both my DDs fell out of bed loads of times when they were little. They never woke up though. We would find them there in the morning. We figured they obviously weren't hurting themselves and they eventually stopped doing it.

HauntedNoddyCar · 09/09/2014 22:56

Get some towels.
Roll them up into sausages
Put them under the open edge of the mattress so it is raised up slightly.
Child tends to roll downhill towards wall.
Easy to do when away too

charlietangoteakettlebarbeque · 09/09/2014 22:56

Sounds fairly straightforward.

What about putting them down for the night.? I reckon it's only the bars stopping him from getting up every 5 min to try and get some extra playing time in before sleep!

Dreading taking the bars off Confused

Sorry for hijacking your thread, op!!

kiwiscantfly · 09/09/2014 22:58

Use a pool noodle under the sheet, they also travel easily (if you're driving that is)

HenriettaTurkey · 09/09/2014 23:01

The towels idea is genius! Then I suppose we can make the towels smaller as time goes by and wean him off... I love it.

Good to know that yours all grew out of it fairly rapidly: and that there are transportable solutions if needed. Grin

No worries, Charlie. I should warn you, DS used to sleep regularly till 8am but since the bars have come down he's awake at 7am on the dot. Not bad, I know, but he's missing an hours sleep each morning (and so am I. Weep)

Oh god no. I wonder why he would wake earlier? Do you have any idea?

I think I'll keep him in his cot until he's 18.

BackforGood · 09/09/2014 23:05

ds carried on falling out until he was about 9 or 10.
Just saying Wink

HenriettaTurkey · 09/09/2014 23:18

No idea - we wondered if it's because that's when the heating comes on! Have switched it off tonight Wink

9 or 10! Nooo!!

I've just put my 13 month old in a bed, with rolled up towels under the sheet, and his cot mattress on the floor, just incase.
I've just put him back to bed 50 times, yes I counted. He was fine for naps, but his afternoon one he walked thru when he woke up, so think he realised he could climb out.
Hopefully tomorrow will be better....
Just to pre warn you all. Wink

The towels thing is courtesy of my lovely mum :) Worked brilliantly for my dc.

My dc woke up and we let them have books or toys in bed so they played quietly until about 7.30 if we were lucky.

HauntedNoddyCar · 09/09/2014 23:31

13 months is quite early to be out of a cot.

The towels are to prevent rolling out whilst asleep, not to stop them getting out yellow

ElephantsNeverForgive · 09/09/2014 23:33

DD2 is 13, and I'd still not guarantee she's grown out of falling out of bed.

She's fallen out of her own double bed loads of times and various beds in hotels and caravans. Generally takes the quilt with her an you find her asleep on the floor.

DD1 declared her an utter nightmare on last summers camping trip. She just rolled on top of her sister and stayed asleep.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 09/09/2014 23:50

Well he's been trying to climb out so had to move him to a bed as he was in a travel cot with a proper mattress.
And I'm aware the towel are to stop him rolling out.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 09/09/2014 23:53

Which they haven't!he just landed on his cot mattress on the floor and is still asleep.

OneLittleToddleTerror · 10/09/2014 02:49

The answer is depends on the child. DD is still falling out of her bed and the sides have Been taken out of her cot bed for a year maybe? She just isn't mature enough for it. I read it's something to do with being aware while sleeping. About 2 months ago (or 3), she told us she was too old for bedrails. What has changed is now she won't cry if she has fallen out and woke up.

She is 3.6 btw.
