Does anyone give their child Omega 3 fish oils?

I thought i would put it in this category as it is supposed to help development, concentration etc.

I was just wondering if anyone else has tried their children on Omega 3 fish oils, or is presently giving their children these.

Have you noticed any marked improvement? If so, approx how long did it take?

Yes I give mine the haliborange fish oil capsules which they love - they call them 'juicy beans'.

I don't know what improvements there have been specifically, but my children both concerntrate well and enjoy school. I started giving them to them because I read some much about the good they do and I was taking them so I thought why not. My doctor also told me it is the only supplement he takes himself.

I figure it can't do any harm and as they don't really like oily fish and they are supposed to have two portions a week I thought I would use the supplements so I didn't have to worry.

I get them from boots when they have the 3 for 2 offer on children's vitamins.

I got mine from boots too, dd1 (7) won't eat fish full stop, dd2 will occasionally eat some haddock when I broil it in water.

yes I do (sporadically)

ds used to get terrible nightmares - we started the fish oils and after about a week, they had stopped. He took them for 3 months - no nightmares. When we stopped them again, the nightmares came back. Started them once more and they were gone within a week!

I have no idea whether it was just coincidence or not!

Radley · 21/09/2006 09:51

Blimey, it certainly sounds more than coincidence to me. Poor little mite, I can still remember what it was like for me when I was little and I used to suffer nightmares.

I've actually just started, DD's concentration is terrible which is why I decided to give them a go. Only had them for 3 days though so far

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 21/09/2006 09:52

can i ask what age you can start giving them to your children?

Jess is 2.2 so wondering if she is too young.

multitasker · 21/09/2006 09:58

She sounds a bit young. I give DS fish oil supplement recommended in Sun Times few weeks ago Equazen Eye Q smooth. Bit early to tell if they have made a difference but will definitely post if I think it was a good idea.
£14.99 for months supply of sachets.

multitasker · 21/09/2006 09:58

DS is almost 6.

threebob · 21/09/2006 09:59

Flax seed oil is good for young ones. Fish oil seems to have loads of other stuff in to take away taste (presumably).

I'm giving dd omega-3 milk at the moment, but will try her on fish oil, as her concentration is appalling (having said that she seems to be learning in spite of not concentrating!)

Radley · 21/09/2006 10:03

JARM - There is one available from boots, in liquid form which is suitable from 6 months. It's boots own.

I don't know if it's just a coincidence, but my teenage DS has become more even tempered and communicative on fish oils.

cacaboo · 21/09/2006 10:39

JARM - equazen make something called mumomega infancy which I think you can give from 6 months. DS is 2.5 and I now use regular "adult" eye q (mixed into his breakfast cereal).
