Rolling baby's got me worried!

My 3 1/2 month old DD has just started rolling from front to back and is desperate to roll from her back to her front too. While I'm delighted she's doing this, I'm also a bit worried about it, as she is not good on her tummy and when I give her tummy time, she gets so tired and buries her head (and nose) in the ground. I'm really worried that she'll do this when I put her down to sleep and that she might suffocate. Am I being paranoid or should I put something next to her so she can't roll in her cot? I would love to hear from anyone who has been through this and come out the other side! Advice greatly appreciated!

hi
my ds started rolling on to his front a while ago but has only just started to roll back again and he is now 8 months old he does sometimes sleep on his front and i was worried too, but he either sleeps like it, or if he cant breath he soon cries out.

can your dd hold her own head up?

Hi missboo. Yes she can hold her head up, but gets increasingly tired and feeble! Obviously, it's fine during the day as I'm around and about, but I worry if she wakes up at night and rolls over, I might not hear her. She's very strong otherwise and has been holding her head level for quite a while. She's also a very big girl and I wonder if this has anything to do with it, as her head is big!? She's gorgeous though!!
Good to hear your DS has coped well, gives me some hope! Thanks!

Hi my DS (now 7 months) has been able to roll onto his tummy for about three months, but only just learning to roll back. He never tried to rol onto his tummy at night until about a month ago, and I was really worried and would flip him back every time for the first couple of nights but in the end I gave up as he was so upset when I moved him. He now sleeps on his tummy every night (I put him in on his back and he usually flips straight away). He sleeps so much better now and gets through the night 90% of the time (it used to be about 10%). If he is in trouble (he sometimes wedges himself in awkward positions) he just cries out for me, but usually he is quite happy. Even if your DD gets tired, she will turn her head to the side, I never saw DS do this until he did it in bed, so dont worry if she buries her nose in the ground during daytime, my DS did this too! Life with babies is so scary! Just check on her now and again at night if you are worried, but I am sure she will let you know if she is not happy...

I agree with babybensmum my DS did excatley the same thing its very hard doing things for the first time but im sure she will be fine.

In general, when a baby can do something for themselves it means that their body is strong enough to cope with it and that it's right for them. So I wouldn't worry. Just make sure that all the usual bedroom things are right - cool room, feet-to-foot in the cot, not too many blankets etc. In fact, if she's getting mobile then it would be a good idea to get her into a sleeping bag as then you won't have any worries about her getting tangled in the blankets or getting too cold.

Thank you for all the tips. I'm sure she'll be fine. You're right about babies doing things when their bodies are ready for it. That's a great way of looking at it. Aren't they amazing?!
