Maybe I should have posted in 'teens' or 'pre teens'.

At what age do you let your d&c have a mobile phone?

I have told dd she can have one once she is at high school, mainly becuase she might have to wait a while for me to pick her up as dd2 will be at primary school finishing at roughly the same time, dd1's high school will be a 10 minute drive away so she will have wait for me, I would rather she has a phone on her.

She's not starting high school until next year. Spoke to her friends mum about it today and she said 'no way would she buy her ds a phone at that age', so is 11 too young for a phone?

"a cheapish easy use basic phone without a camera"

Like this and dozens of others? or pawn shops, ebay.

In my experience kids will not use them, though. An uncool phone is such terrible naff social death that they refuse to charge or use it. Can't surf Tinternet on that, either, so solves those issues, though it's not that hard to choose a package/provider that has some default filtering, & to make sure the household Youtube account & OpenDNS all filter, too.

DS has a £15 Nokia 106, no camera, no internet etc. I top it up £10 a month which gives him a few hundred minutes, unlimited texts and a bit of data (which he has no ability to use, but it's part of the bundle).

We made the decision to let him have a mobile when we started to home educate him, as an easy way for him to keep in touch with his school friends. He is 10, and it's a little younger than I was originally planning to allow him one, but things change Smile

If/when we decide to allow him a smartphone, he'll be getting our old models. There is no way one of my kids is getting a newer phone then me! Grin
