Toddler waking at 5:30 / 5:45am because of soiled nappy. Any advice?

20 month old DD has started telling us when she has a soiled / wet nappy (and occasionally when she needs to poo). I'm very tentatively thinking of potty training later in the summer when I have time off.

The problem is she has started waking up at 5:45am ish and calls out "mum. Poo" every morning. I go and change her but by the time I've done that she's wide awake.

Up until this episode she was sleeping through until 6:30 / 7am ish.

What can I do to encourage her to stay asleep longer? Could I go and wake her for a loo run at about 5am ish? Or should I do that later the night before? Or do I just have to suck it up and cope with the early mornings until she's night potty trained?!

You could try and change her pooping times. High fibre brekie with fruit might make her need to go in the evening instead of early morning. Even once potty trained they are still very dependant on you for a good while to help clean themselves up x

TBH that is a pretty normal time for a toddler to wake up. Both mine have gone through that early waking stage and we would just hope the' make it to 6:00 and call it a day. what time is bed? If you consider a 20 month usually goes to bed by say 7:30/8:00pm....that is 10 hrs of sleep.

May seem obvious but try to wear her out with exercise during the day, make sure nap is not too late in the day, avoid late day catnaps where reasonable, try moving bed back a little bit to see if that has any effect. it's good she is more aware of her poos/pees in the long run. Kids do go through little cycles of going poo at the same time every day I find.....but it eventually shifts.

all in all it's a phase and you will probably have to wait it out is my thought.

Thanks both. I'm not wanting to get her to sleep longer for me - I've adjusted well to the early mornings. It's just she seems so shattered and it's making mornings with a grumpy girl tough until her nap.

Her diet is really good, she has a varied diet, and she (we) are very active.

A one / one and a half hour nap after lunch / early afternoon most days.

Perhaps I'll try bed a bit later. She's going to bed at about 7:15 at the minute.

I thinks you're right though... It's just another phase I'll have to get through.

I hope the good diet and exercise bit didn't come across as ungrateful for the advice.

no of course not Smile - altering her diet a bit for a few days might change this particular poo time cycle your in (an extra banana or some such)

I'll give it a go Smile
