13 month blinking excessively

Hi all
I've noticed that my 13 month old DD has started to blink excessively the past 2 nights. I'm not sure if it's happened during the day as she's been at nursery. I'll ask them tmrw.
I noticed it during dinner and afterwards tonight. It's exaggerated, excessive blinking and sometimes she has a slight shudder of her shoulders and torso. She has been very tired and my DH thinks that might be the cause but I'm wondering if these are early signs of anything more worrying.
Has anyone had any experience of this? She's also been scrunching her face up!

Have you had a good look in her eyes to make sure there is not something in there. Like an eyelash?
Could be coming down with a cold.
Or cold be that she has just figured out that she can blink on command and is testing it out.

Does she have any allergies that you know of?

Dd2 blinks a lot when her hayfever is bad

Dd1 just enjoyed blinking when she worked out she could do it

Thanks. She doesn't seem to have anything in them. She was shuddering a few times when eating, like when you get a shudder down your spine! Then blinking really quickly and hard. I just hope it's tiredness. Although I just remember I had the news on the TV in the background and she started doing it then too, I obviously switched it off straight away and took her to bed. I'm wondering if that caused it but that worries me for eye troubles etc...

She has eczema and is growing out of a cows milk allergy. I did wonder if she has a bit of hay fever as she is rubbing her nose quite a bit lately! My first observation of it made me think she was doing it like a tic if that makes sense?

My dd also has eczema and various other allergies and in her they are definitely connected

While she's doing it, if you touch her or talk to her does she respond appropriately?

LindsayS79 · 07/08/2014 22:39

Yes she doesn't change her behaviour. She's not really been looking at me when she does it, more her toys or the TV until I switched it off!

I would say probably dry eye then connected to allergies and tiredness

But like everything, if you are concerned see your GP, they never mind seeing babies

Actually another random thought

Dd2 also wears glasses and did from 20 months when I noticed a tiny squint developing

If its while she is focusing on toys etc it might be eyesight related

Thanks for all your comments. I'm going to see how she is over the weekend and see the GP next week if nothing changes. Her dad has poor eyesight so could always be an option

My dd suffers from this also. It started about 13 months and would start and stop randomly.

She had test, doctor visits and other various things done to determine what the cause was.

It was a tic.

It seems to come on when she approached a new mile stone, or a new developmental phase.

It tends to last about a week maximum and hasn't caused any damage at all.

The doctor said it a fairly common tic to develop in younger children and should pass by 5 years of age.

LindsayS79 · 08/08/2014 07:23

Wow that's really interesting! It really does look like a tic the more I think about it actually. I did start googling it, but made myself upset with the info that I found Sad
If these tics are quite common rather than all down to Tourette's etc then that's reassuring!
