My nearly 7 year old is driving me mad at the mo cos she is a fairly clever girl but when it comes to reading homework she mucks around & just does not make the effort. Most often she will speak in a very silly voice & make no effort to sound words out, how can I encourage her without putting her off reading??
Please help cos I'm an avid book lover & don't want her to miss out
xx

Stop trying. She'll get there, and maybe she's picked up that she doesn't read as well as you hope she will. Just keep reading to her and reading in front of her and making reading and books part of family life. My ds did this and I worried myself silly, but she is now (aged 10) a real reader. Relax. It'll happen.

Agree with Curlew. Relax.

goshme I have an unwilling reader (not quite the same as yr DD maybe) in DS1 but the thing to do for us has been to grab his interest with the right kind of books. For him it's non fiction eg books about the Romans or space or dinosaurs or whatever.
For your DD it might be anything - why not take her to bookshop/library and let her choose? Many of the reading books at school are not that engaging, frankly.

Does she read comics? The Beano is pretty good - and as it comes out weekly you won't get tired of hearing the same jokes.
