First words?

Curious... my DS is very nearly 12months old.

He babbles a lot but all very meaningless. He will say mama, dada, baba, brabra, da", ca", etc. We thought he'd nailed 'cat' - we have one who he loves - but then he used this for 'clap', and literally everything else. Now he's gone off it and is currently just yelling.

Friends the same age have children with contextual, deliberate words.

We talk to him a lot and occasionally he will mimic a 'heroo' (ie hello) or 'row row' as in row row your boat - but then it's gone.

When did your DCs get their first words?

Relatively recently - he's 2.1

Words in context have taken a long time. You may have heard something about them being either a walker or a talker - DS is a walker. Very physically able.

Try to relax about it - he sounds right on track to me. The scope of 'normal' is huge at 1 year old.

CulturalBear · 15/07/2014 13:13

I suppose that's true - he's very nearly walking - now happy one handed and can balance on his feet for a good few seconds now.

I think the boy element may also be a factor - I was walking at 9/10 months apparently, and he looked to be on track for that - has been pulling up since 8 months, but hasn't got himself quite into gear yet.

He's also an eater rather than a sleeper but that's a whole other either/or debate :)

My dd is 11 months and says 'dada' for most things, including me. But she consistently says it to dh so she knows he's dada. She says 'mamam' when she's sleepy or crying and I'm still not sure it's aimed at me. I thought she'd be saying definite words by this point too, all her mates do! But then she can open the cover and switch on the iPad so she's gifted in other ways... (Dear god!)

HilariousInHindsight · 15/07/2014 20:57

DD is 15 months and mainly babbles.

How many words are they supposed to be able to say by now?

She says dada, mama , mum, daddy, ganda (grandad), ha (granny), arch (the dog named Archie), nah (no).

She's said octi once or twice for octopus and makes a ca noise for the cat .

Hilarious you have a child prodigy!

I also get a long mamama when he's very sad or upset (never dadad then, typically!) :)

About 18 months for ours.

DD only really said 'ta' and 'yeh' at 12 months but DS at this age now is a real chatterbox and has a go at most words. We have mama, dada, DD's name, dog, 'in there/ on there' when he wants to be on something or put something away, bye, ta, yeh etc. It amazes us to be honest as was not expecting it at all!

learnermummy · 16/07/2014 13:41

My 12.5 month old DD has just mastered "hiya" which is very cute first thing. It's the only word she uses in context.

Paddingtonthebear · 16/07/2014 13:46

"Tree" just before 12 months

EmmanuelWoganberry · 16/07/2014 13:47

Mine is 13mo and has no clear words although is starting to make sounds that I understand and seem to have meaning, such as doi for dummy and duddo for cuddle. She isn't anywhere near walking so I think out of walking or talking she has gone for the neither option.
