4 month old baby very floppy

I wondered if anyone can help please. My 3rd baby is just 4 months and I am a bit concerned about his head and back strength. He seems quite 'newborn' still, and cannot hold his head up very easily for long. In a sitting position his back bends over and he needs a lot of support in under his arms to stay upright, often with my hand helping to stop his head rolling back. He is very smiley, can hear and see, is bringing his hands to his mouth and sucking them, but he seems very wobbly and floppy. Can anyone give me an idea of whether this is within the normal range. I am so worried, and I jut can't remember what my other two did at this stage, but I'm worried they were a lot stronger.
Thanks.

Just to add, had high risk screening for Downs when pregnant, which was all clear after a CVS, but despite the clear CVS, has made me very worried that the baby will be unwell.

Poor you. I'm wondering if you could see HV or GP and get a referral to a Paediatrician, either in community or at hospital clinic. You could then either be reassured this is within "normal" range or they may run tests to rule out genetic conditions. I'm wondering if your mind is fixing on your pregnancy experience?

My son has DS but it was immediately obvious as soon as he was born, although tests took a few days. I had had other children and as soon as I held him I could feel the difference.

As you too have had other children, I would trust your instinct and follow this up. It may be nothing, just a delay, but you would put your mind at rest.

Good luck x

Hi I'm no expert but I'll add my experience, ds was sitting up unaided by 6 months dd about 8 months, they're all different so really shouldn't compare ability at such a young age, try to relax and enjoy your beautiful baby

I would go to gp for reassurance. However at 4 months neither of mine were particulary strong. They could hold head up well but didn't sit at all until 6 months ish. Walked around 12/14 months so seemed to have first 6 months doing nothing then leapt through sitting/ rolling/ crawling and walking in 6 months

Hi, I’m sorry you’re in this position.

I’m afraid for us the outcome was not great- many years down the line now, but our child is seriously disabled. We discovered in the months following my original post that lots of other things were wrong too and that he had a very serious gene disorder.

I do hope that for you the story may be very different. There can be so many other less serious causes, and we were just really unlucky.
