How long from first steps to walking?

My 9-month-old twins have been standing independly for about a month now and learned to stand up without support about two weeks ago. They both love zooming around with their little push toy, but this week one has begun taking her first steps unaided. I think she has finally worked out that walking will get her around faster than crawling does.

Just curious how long it usually takes to go from first steps to walking? A few days? Weeks? Months?

Normally a couple of days if encouraged :) l

All of those, if my friends' children are anything to go by, and it seems to depend on how individually motivated they feel. One friend's DD could easily take 5 or 6 steps at 13 months, but preferred to be wheeled around in a pushchair until about 18 months, when she finally decided she'd like to be able to run around with her friends. My dd took her first steps at 12.5 months and was walking confidently within a week or two. Sounds like your two are at the younger end for walking - and obviously enjoying it!

I wish. Mine had been at first steps stage for several weeks. And walks fine holding one of my fingers. But independent walking. No!! He says.

minipie · 02/07/2014 13:11

Clearly it varies!

For my DD it was about 2 weeks from "two or three steps then fall over" to "can walk across the room reasonably well"

However she's still not very stable 6 months later at 18 months! Whereas other children her age who walked later or more cautiously are now walking more stably than her.

Linguaphile · 02/07/2014 13:17

What do you mean by encouragement? Like, sitting just a few steps away and encouraging her to walk, or actually 'walking' them with fingers? I've refused point-blank to 'walk' them up until now because with two of them I wouldn't be doing anything else (hence the push walker toy)! Wasn't sure of the fact that they're quite early to be taking steps means that it'll be longer until they walk than it would be if they'd started a little later.

It would be v exciting to have them walking around properly in a few weeks--would save the knees on their dresses from all the crawling!!

About a month where they become really good. Ds spent a good two weeks hurling himself about once he started taking steps.

BikeRunSki · 02/07/2014 13:23

Ds - about 3 months
Dd- about an hour

DS took steps in January and walked mid April.

GiantIsopod · 03/07/2014 00:11

DD stood up in the morning, was walking fine by the afternoon, before that she'd been quite content to do very little, so it was a bit of a surprise!

DS, it took about three weeks.

ShineSmile · 03/07/2014 00:23

A couple of days.

For my daughter (she was 14 months) she went from two wobbly steps to independent walking in 2 weeks. She had started standing / cruising at 12 months.

However a lot of the babies I know who stood / cruised earlier took months and seemed to walk independently around the same time as mine.

Shahsham · 03/07/2014 13:04

DS started walking at 10 months. Within a day of hisfirst wobbly steps he was properly walking. He was properly running 2 weeks later. Very cute as he was so tiny but a bir of a pain when meeting other mums as i spent the while time chasing him whilst they chatted with their slow crawling babies.

My friends DS started walking at 13 months but took several months before he could walk properly.

neversleepagain · 03/07/2014 16:27

Twin one took first steps and was ready for shoes 4 weeks later, her sister was the same. For them to walk confidently around with the occasional stumble or fall didn't take very long.

Within two months both were able to climb up a 6 foot slide (the actual slide bit), turn around and slide down!

MultipleMama · 03/07/2014 17:23

DS1 took his first steps around 13 months, and DD1 took her first steps around 14 months. My ID twins went from cruising to walking independently within a couple of weeks and they were 11mo old. And currently my 9mo DD2 took her first steps last week DH says it was just falling with style but hasn't made any attempt to try again, she loves to cruise around using the furniture or someone holding her hands. However, twin brother isn't even sitting unaided yet so a long way off walking.

MultipleMama · 03/07/2014 17:25

Oh, forgot to add. DS1 took around 3 weeks from steps to walking, and DD1 took roughly a month and a bit from steps to walking.

DeWee · 03/07/2014 21:26

Dd1 took her first steps at 14 months and never crawled again 2 days later.
Dd2 took her first steps at 8 months, was mostly fully walking by 9 months, but if tired or ill would revert to crawling until she was about 18 months.
Ds took his first steps at 9 months, and still chose to crawl at 18 months because he preferred to push a car around and watch the wheels. He would walk if I told him to, but if he had a choice always crawled. I think he was about 20 months before he would choose to usually walk.

mrscog · 03/07/2014 23:37

Straight away for my DS but he didn't take a single step until 18 months, so it was like he was waiting until he could do it all perfectly!

Hatetidyingthehouse · 05/07/2014 20:38

Months! And from standing to steps ages also. Was standing holding on to stuff at 8 months. Took a couple of steps at a year. Walking at 14 months. Although I know others that just do it all at once! At 8 months I was certain they'd be walking by a year but it just didn't happen

Kafri · 05/07/2014 22:09

My DS too his first steps the week before he turned 1 but for ages would only do it as a game - ie, he would walk back and forth between DH and I if we encouraged and praised. He loved the celebration of him doing it. He only started using walking instead of carling at 16m or so.
Having said that, at 16m when he did start he seemed to take off all at once. He preferred to crawl one day then the next walked everywhere.
I think it's like everything else in baby world - they do everything when they're ready.

FreeButtonBee · 05/07/2014 22:31

My twins went from first steps (hurtling between sofa and armchair) at just over 11 months to properly toddling on the first birthday. They were tiny (DTD especially) so people were astonished to see these uber mini people walkin around and climbing the steps to the slide etc.

I think with twins you don't have the ability to eg walk about with them holding your hand so they learn to get on with it. Mine at 16 months refuse to hold my hand except a special treat for me. Makes walking to the shops 'interesting'.
