Baby sticking out tongue

Hi! I'm a mum of two teenage girls & nothing like this existed when they were babies so I'm really hoping someone can help me out. It's regarding my 9 week old nephew who has his tongue out continuously - is this normal? I didn't experience this with my girls & find it very odd. I have joked with my niece that he is a very cheeky chap as he always has his tongue out but she laughed it off. I don't want to upset her but I think she should mention it to the Health Visitor. Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Hi I think it's pretty normal my 5month old does it especially when he's concentrating e.g when trying to pick up a toy ,
He's been doing this since he was born and I'm pretty sure my oldest stuck his tongue out too
Can I ask what you think is wrong with him ?

Both my daughters did this and I wasn't worried in the slightest, both grew out of it once they could do more things.

My DD had her tongue out pretty much all the time until she was about 6 months old. I was a bit worried but told it was nothing to worry about as long as she could put it back in, i.e. no muscle defect.

Then gradually she did it less and less (especially after she got teeth!). Now at 19 months she has it out quite often compared to other children but mainly when concentrating - it's a habit not a physical thing iyswim, she likes to touch her nose with her tongue and stick it out sideways!

Thanks very much, appreciate it. I don't think there is anything wrong with him but just found it very odd.

My brother did it always when he was concentrating. He is 27 now and when is working on something where he really needs to concentrate his tongue is out. He sometimes doesn't notice it.

Like tongue thrust, you mean? Usually this sort if thing disappears, but if you are concerned, you can ask the HV or GP to refer to a SLT (preferably a feeding specialist at this age).

Probably nothing, but if it's unusual enough to worry you...

Dd2 had a raft of oromotor issues and SLT from birth.

(And yeah. Loads of people stick their tongues out when concentrating.. That's different to having poor oromotor tone, or other issues though)

I always did this as a baby and child and my ds is the same. It's not particularly a concentration thing. It's never caused me an issue as far as I've realised.

I maybe completely wrong but I would just get someone to check if he has some sort of tongue tie.

DS2 had his tongue out constantly when he was small...its out on every single photo! And then when he was 6 months old and started weaning he really struggled so got sent to hospital and he had a really tight frenulum under his tongue so it used to sit in the same position all the time if that makes sense. They released it there and then and ever since his tongue goes in.
