Height at Primary school

My eldest is in YR1 and only 108cm, in a class of thirty he is one of the smallest and about the same height as about five others. This is to be expected as I at 5ft1 and DH is 5ft7 but what puzzles me is that a few of the other children have parents the same height but the children are massive to my eyes and must be 15cm taller. Can short parents have tall children (as adults) or do some children stop growing earlier than others? Just a bit worried that my DS is going to end up at 5ft nothing or similar.

Just because the children are tall in y1 doesn't mean they will remain tall. Some children reach their full height by the time they are 12, others, like me, keep growing until 18. The best indicator of height is your parents height, although this isn't an exact science either.

My dsis was tall when she went to secondary. She didn't grow any further and is now 5'3", not tall.
I otoh was tiny in year 7-I had size 13 shoes for example. I'm 5'6", which isn't small.
My dbro is a foot taller than me.
My dm is about my height, and df is pretty average for a man.

One of dd1's friends, who is 18 months older than her, was the same height as dd1 from the age of (dd1's age) 18 months until about age 9 or 10yo. She's now age 14yo, and much taller than dd1, it's looking like she will be quite tall for a lady, and dd1 will be at most average height.

I was taller than my (admittedly short) teacher when I was 8, but I stopped growing when I was 11 so now I'm only on the tall side of average (5'7). My DH was always the smallest in his class and only 5ft til he was about 15 but he kept growing later and ended up being 6'4!

lynniep · 30/06/2014 12:31

Don't worry. It happens in fits and starts. I was the tallest in my class always, but stopped growing at 10 and everyone else overtook me.

My boys are both tall, but DS1 is in year 2 and some children that were a good head shorter than him last year are now the same height. Others are still a head shorter, but were the same height as him in reception.

You cant really tell conclusively by the parents heights.

throckenholt · 30/06/2014 12:37

My brother and his wife are about the same as you two, and has two sons who are over 6ft at age 17 and 18 (so maybe still time to grow a bit more). They weren't abnormally tall in primary school.

I would only be concerned if DC isn't growing steadily. I have shorties - but they are growing steadily, so have no real concern.

throckenholt · 30/06/2014 12:38

Meant to say - boys are often smaller than girls until teenage - then the girls stop growing and the boys start :)

LizzieMint · 30/06/2014 12:41

You are supposed to be able to get an indication of adult height by (I think) doubling their height when they were 2 for boys and 18 months for girls.
I'm a tall child of average parents (mum 5'3" dad 5'9" - I'm 5'10") but did have a tall grandparent (just one!) so I think mine comes from there.

KEGirlOnFire · 30/06/2014 13:10

Please try not to worry.

My DD is one of the youngest in Reception but is only 97cms. She is on the 0.4th centile on the growth charts. DH and I are both 5ft 8. My Family are 5ft 8 plus but DH's Mum was only 5ft and his two sisters are only 5ft 2.

The calculations where they use the Parents heights are NOT the be-all and end-all.

We put DD through 7 blood tests, scans and x-rays because they said she was too small and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with her.

DD may well have a growth spurt, but looking at the females on DH's side... I don't think so. I just tell her that she'll be the lucky one being able to buy the best shoes and clothes in the Sales!!

Her feet are only (just) size 7 now and she's 5!!!

purpleroses · 30/06/2014 13:13

In reception a lot depends on when their birthdays are. A September birthday 5 year old with small parents may small for their age but average for their year group.

mandbaby · 30/06/2014 14:19

I would say a lot depends on their birthday. I was always the tiniest at school (end of August birthday) but have perfectly average to tall parents. In fact, I was so tiny that I used to get some friends asking if I'd been adopted because my parents weren't at all tiny.

As soon as I reached the age of 16-17, I was comparible with others in my class. I'm 5' 6" now, which I think is probably average, maybe taller than average.

I wouldn't worry at all about their height, as hard as it is.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 30/06/2014 14:27

I'm the opposite - my mum is 5'10, my dad 6'. I am 5'6, which is taller than average, but quite short for such a tall mother.

I was also tiny until about Yr 9, then I grew to my adult height pretty quickly.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 30/06/2014 14:33

There's something in the back of our ds's red books (you know the ones where all of their vaccinations and weights, lengths etc get recorded when they're babies) about working out their adult sized heights from their height at a certain age.

Ds2 is the third youngest in his year 1 class but isn't one of the shortest by a long way. He's about 120cms and from very average height parents.

RiverTam · 30/06/2014 14:37

DH and I aren't tall (5'9 and 5'2), but DH's mum is 5'7, his sister is 6' and one of his brothers is 6'3, so DD could go either way! She seemed quite tall when she was 3 but now (4.5) she's shorter than quite a few in her nursery class.

Ollybob · 30/06/2014 16:54

Kids just grow at different rates, I think as long as they follow the curve in their red book and don't drop down more than a couple of percentiles then they should be fine. Dd is almost 12 but has size 1 feet and is 126 cm, defiantly shorter than average, well looking at all the other kids in her class towering over her that is! But she is still growing and that's the main thing :) a neighbours son has grown about a foot in the last 2/3 years so he's nearly finished growing at 13!

Raximobie · 30/06/2014 20:02

In Y1 DD1 was almost a head shorter than most of the kids in her class. Not so anymore. She is now in Y4 and is average height amongst kids in her class. I do worry that she won't be that tall as an adult as I'm 5ft0 and DH is 5ft8.

tmae · 30/06/2014 22:51

I was never particularly short until I stopped growing at 13 at about 5ft 2in, and by the time I was 16 I had shrunk to 5ft and my feet had shrunk from size 5/6 to size 3
