Autism - ds2 being assessed

My DH and I had to go to a parental today at my DS2s pre school as they need our permission to get his behaviour assessed. I knew myself that it would happen but still feel a bit sad. It's the repetition that is worrying them more than anything. Plus he's over tactile. I'd love to hear from anyone else who's going/gone through the same thing.

juniper, no advice but there are some lovely ladies on here with autistic children who will advise you better. Hope things get sorted for you.

Juniper, my DS1 is four and a half and a year ago was diagnosed as high-functioning autistic. Please do post more about your DS2 and any questions you have and I'll do my best to answer them based on our experience. It is tough, much sympathy,

Have a look through SN- there's loads of us there. My 4 and half year old ds1 is autistic.

Over-tactileness (is that a word) can be a sign of sensory problems rather than autism (recommend reading- the out of sync child). Its just that most autistic children/adults have sensory problems.

It's good that he's being assessed though. Is there anything else apart from the repetitive behaviour?

thanks for the messages, it's so good to get support and advice. He has a very short temper and screams at people (sometimes) I know he's only 3 1/2 but he is different to my friends kids. Also there is autism in the family and my nephew is severly autistic. His understanding is getting better, as is his speech, thogh he finds it hard to 'relate' properly iykwim?
thanks again xxx
Can anyone recommend a good website? Or support group online?

well there's Aut-uk not exactly a support group as such, but there are lots of parents on it - and its a good place for advice.

There are plenty of support groups out there- have a broswe on yahoo groups. I'm a member of chatters but I think its full at the moment.

Nothing you've said so far worried me particularly. What age did he start pointing? What's he like around other children? Does he point out things of interest to you (eg "look mummy there's a doggyy" or even just a point and "dog" What's his play like? Does he play imaginatively with little playsets?

Jimjams · 29/03/2004 14:38

BTW if you type autism into google you'll get thousands of website. I think its worth trawling through them- or type autism uk and then you'll get the more local stuff.

juniper I use some yahoo groups for my daugter too but sometimes they are that busy I get a bit lost!!! I find the SN section on mumsnet is VERy supportive, jimjams I cant beleive you didnt suggest that

Jimjams · 29/03/2004 14:50

I did - in my earlier post fio

Feeling a bit bleurgh and dozy today. Stonking headache and yukky meeting tomorrow

DS1 also has a new game called- "pushing other people's doorbells" which means that every trip from the car to the front door has descended into a wrestling match today. And ds2 loves to copy his big brother so usually wrestling with 2 of them at once. AND ds2 has gone back to sniffing books (copying big brother who's been doing it a lot). They look like Cat from Red Dwarf.

Sorry this is probably the wrong section for this- but I feel better now (sorry juniper- but some examples of autistic behaviour).

BTW juniper you may find it useful to read through the threads about semantic pragmatic disorder and AS in SN- see if any of it "fits" so to speak.

thats how I feel today jimjams!! have a stonking headache and ds2 refused to walk the 3/4 a mile back from nursery. I was carrying almost upside down all the way home whilst he tantrummed. Got some lovely looks. May get a t-shirt with piss off on it

Jimjams · 29/03/2004 18:30

How about a tatoo on your forehead? I often think I need one of those....

juniper68 · 29/03/2004 21:30

Lol at the tshirt/tatoo idea. Maybe we could get a job lot
