11 month old chewing on fingers until she vomits

Hi,

I'm hoping that you wise MNers can help me. My 11 month old daughter has been chewing on her fingers (she's getting her incisors in) until she gags, and/or vomits. She's been sick once a day (though she definitely chews far more often) for the past week. I can't seem to get her to stop.... I've tried giving her other things to chew on (bits of bagel, breadsticks, raisins), but she definitely seems to prefer her pudgy fingers. She thrusts several fingers as far back into her mouth as she can. Is this a result of teething and will pass on its own, or something I should be really worried about?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Maomao

My dd started this at around 9 months and continued it for at least 4 months. It was always the fingers that she would shove to the back of throat and subsequently gag/wretch.

To me , I think it was just to see how far back she could put them and to explore her mouth. It was very frustrating and she occassionally did it with some toys aswell. In the end , I think she just got bored with it. I don't remember teething having anything to do with it with my dd.

Hope it will pass soon.

Thanks, fimbles.

I hope it passes soon, too. In the meantime, the washer is getting extra use, I guess!

Dd's been doing this for the last couple of weeks as she's getting some molars in. She hasn't actually been sick but retches.

Evita, how old is your dd? Initially I thought it was due to molars, but then thought that my dd is too young. She is getting a bunch of teeth in at once, though.

My ds has been doing this for a few weeks - he's 16 months - and I'm glad to hear he's not the only one (not that I'm happy your kids are retching or anything). It doesn't seem to have anything to do with teething and I'm trying not to let it become a 'thing' he does to get my attention. Honestly, kids think of the weirdest things for you to worry about.

I saw a link to this thread or one similar on the front page a while back and was desperately trying to see if other people were experiencing this but the link didnt work for me.
My Ds has been doing this for a couple of months now and hes just turned one.
I'm glad to hear its normal and that hopefully he dosnt stand and do it in the living room while I do the same in the bathroom as Im sufferingfrom (morning???) all day sickness.
Would people recommend telling him off for doing this or completely ignoring it as I'm sure sometime he does it for attention?

Thanks people
B

hello

my ds used to make herself gag, was never actually sick but came close, spoke to the health visitor and she said to totally ignore it as long as you know they are not choking, apparantly she when she started doing it she would obvoisly get my attention in that i was concerned she was ok and then would ask her to stop, she then learned that gagging would get my attention very quickly, it stopped within a few weeks of ignoring her, i would just give her a look to make sure she was ok and safe but not say anything and walk away after i had checked her. hope this helps

Same as lupins. I ignored ds and he doesn't do it anymore. Now he makes this REALLY annoying two note whingeing noise, kind of like a siren, which is driving me demented.
