Dry at night...how long did it take?

Hi,

We potty trained DS (3.5) around a year ago now, he was really quick to train and has brilliant bladder control during the day
can go far longer than me without a wee

He's not had a single dry night yet though - is this normal? I know it's to do with hormones etc, but not sure when these normally kick in?

Thanks!

is he having any milk/fluids before bed? my sister said that makes it much harder.

My dd is 3.5 and in exactly the same position... she has a small cup of milk before bed, but produces much more wee than that during the night..

bigkidsdidit · 22/06/2014 06:49

Mine too - 3.5, trained for a year nearly, very reliable. I haven't tried to train at night because his nappies are always so full. I have no idea how to do it!

All 3 of mine were dry in the day about the same age as your DS was. DS1 was dry at night age 6 while for DD it happened at age 2 (as soon as she was dry in the day)! We're still waiting for DS2 (age 4). It really varies from child to child.

Dry at night is a hormonal thing. If you cut out bedtime milk it is just luck IMO!

We still give ds bedtime milk - he sleeps through the night without accidents (he's 4.5). If he has a lot of drinks in the day, he wakes for a wee.

DD potty trained very reliably in the day before she was 3years old, has only just started having dry nights at age almost 7years old. Until then every night nappy was heavy, it just change very suddenly. Nothing we've changed. She's not the only one in her class at school either.
And you're right you can't night train them DD on the older end on the spectrum but I don't believe the doctors will even consider it a problem until they get to 7or8.

6 year old ds is near enough dry every night, probably one accident per month

5 year old ds is only dry 50% of the time

My son trained himself before I was ready back in December when he was nearly 2.5. He did day and night the same week as he just refused nappies. He has had 2 wet nights since. I don't think drinks before bed make much difference as my son has lots of milk before bed. maybe not right before but about 30-40 minutes before. He used to wake up around 3am for a wee and then mess about in our room jumping around then saying hes hungry so we would then be making toast - nightmare. Anyway we recently were advised by hv to take him when he was half asleep around 10pm to try and stop the habit of waking at 3am. So far it has worked. He now wakes at 6am needing a wee. So i think pp is right it's about a hormone that wakes them?

I've read though that squash, tea and juice can irritate the bladder to go more? not sure how much truth there is in that? But my son never has squash or juice and only has water or milk throughout the day.

Espressotini · 22/06/2014 10:06

Thanks all, his last drink is usually with dinner, but that's usually an hour or so before bed, and we always make sure he has a wee before bed.

I hadn't realised how much variance there is in when it happens - very reassuring Thankyou!

Thanks Rebecca too, I hadn't heard about the squash/juice thing, he usually has fresh juice diluted with water for tea so I'll try moving him onto milk and see if that has any impact too.

Thanks everyone!

Good luck! Maybe try it for a week or so and see if it makes a difference. put a waterproof sheet down and take him when you go to bed as well. could see what happens! I wonder as well if nappies sort of make them wee? If they don't have a nappy on maybe they won't wee? Sorry I really don't have much knowledge on this only my son. My daughter will be next arghh bet she will be really hard! ha
