does your toddler twitch/move in their sleep?

I haven't seen many sleeping toddlers, I wonder do they move at all when they sleep?

Ds is 17 months old, he sleeps pretty well but when he naps in his pushchair his hands and feet twitch a little, it's a bit like when a dog runs in their sleep but not as dramatic.

It's worse if we are out in a restaurant or if it's windy.

He doesn't seem to do it so much in the night time or if he's napping in his cot, but possibly I just don't notice as he has a sleeping bag and often sleeps on his front or side.

I have been trying to casually look at sleeping toddlers when we are out, I must look like a crazy baby stealer!

Any advice/experience would be great!

My 20mo sits up and talks in her sleep. I know this because she is a cosleeping nightmare!

Yes, all of mine have done as you've described, and more.

By child number three, I'd managed to stop worrying about epilepsy and rare tumours Grin

It's rreally reassuring to know other children do this! There is so much to worry about as a parent.

The talking - and arguments not so much as the moving unless you count the removal of any duvet from over any adult in the vicinity.

DD has always thrashed about in her sleep, and occasionally talking.

She's now 5yrs and has added tooth-grinding and snoring to her sleep repertoire. I pity any future bedfellows Grin

My nearly 4yo DS regularly gets in our bed in the wee hours. The talks about all sorts (just like his dad), often what has happened at nursery or what he wants for his birthday Hmm. He also swims around the bed ending up over my head like a hat or down at our feet like a dog. Grin

When he was a baby he twitched in his sleep in such an alarming way that it had me googling types of epilepsy.

No idea about DD (I daren't watch her and risk disturbing her rare and precious slumber) but DH does this sort of twitching quite often. And I think he's normal...

drinkyourmilk · 10/06/2014 22:09

I'd say it's normal. Lots end up on the floor, switched round in their beds etc etc.
I'm a nightmare to sleep with apparently. I fidget non stop, make whiney noises all night long when I'm not singing and have punched my poor fiance several times.

Eyelet · 10/06/2014 22:25

Called hypnic jerks - its because of their immature (but normal) neurological system

ikeaismylocal · 12/06/2014 12:38

Thanks for the posts, I'm feeling calmer about it now!

DD (12 months) moves all over the bed in her sleep. Two nights ago she was right on the other side Shock

TheGrinchWearsStripes · 12/06/2014 12:52

Twitching, snoring, talking, and hurling himself around the cot. I plan on leaving the sides on until he is at least 15 - or maybe taking all the furniture out and just padding the floor, and letting him sleep on that?... Last night I went in and he was draped halfway up the headboard. Sideways. With Teddy between his knees.
