Late crawlers - reassure me DS3 is going to get it one day... preferably before Uni

So DS3 is coming up to 11 months old. He's been rolling over since 5 months, able to push up to sitting from lying down, rotates round on the spot - but is not crawling. He wants to, gets in position and either goes backwards (and gives up) or flops on his belly rather than cross crawl. DS1 was crawling at 8 months, DS2 at 6 months and they both went straight into it so I'm unsure if this is something I should be worried about or not. He loves his jumperoo and likes to stand and put weight on his feet so I don't think there are physical development issues with his legs. How late did your late crawlers start moving?

Hi Dinky (waves)! My friend's little girl is just the same at 11 months. She's also been a bit worried but after talking to our HVs has been really reassured that she's completely fine. And our HVs are as cautious as can be, so the fact they think it's perfectly normal is reassuring I think. Not all babies crawl but some late and non-crawlers end up being early walkers to compensate, apparently

I've got twins who tend to be a bit behind anyway (as they copy their other half IYKWIM). They rolled early, at 3/4 months, but then nada for the best part of a year. One crawled at about 15 months. Backwards. In circles. The other bottom shuffled, to be different, at 16 months. Didn't walk till just after their 2nd birthday. On Mother's Day, bless 'em.

After months of willing them on I now wish they'd never learnt as they just go in different directions. At speed!

In panicky moments when I thought they'd never move, I just used to console myself with the fact that I've never seen a grown up, unless they're disabled, who can't walk, or talk, or go to the toilet...Nature is very efficient and these things just happen when they're ready. Plus, in your case, I imagine with two older siblings there will be a degree of things being brought to them so they don't have that much of an incentive to shift themselves. I know I'd prefer a sedentary lifestyle if that were an option Wink.

Thank you again all - feeling rather reassured here so you're doing a good job.

My DD2 was the same as many of your's didn't crawl until a week after her first birthday (which I thought was SO LATE - looking back it doesn't seem such a big deal), quickly became a proficient crawl, stair climber and bum shuffler, learned to pull-up then cruise around 15 months, and was walking by 17/18 months.

She is now nearly 2 and very quick at walking everywhere, trying to run a bit but not quite up to speed as other 2 year olds (suits me as she can't run off as quick as her elder sister did). She can jump, climb things, can walk up stairs and down them holding a rail and even ride a scooter - so physically doing well. You wouldn't know she spent a whole year sitting on her bum!

These days I worry about the lack of speech (always something)!

ameliarose2012 · 03/06/2014 20:23

Oh oobedobe don't worry about the lack of speech- enjoy the silence! My DD never shuts up talks a lot, and some days I feel like my head might explode haha!

MJP1 · 03/06/2014 20:53

Don't worry they'll do it when their ready , my lo didn't crawl till about 11 months and now at 16 months refuses to walk as she can get around faster on her knees.

dinkystinky · 04/06/2014 11:59

oobedobe - DS2 was quick to crawl but slow to talk. At 5 its impossible to get him to stop talking now!

He's started crawling today - from one side of a rug to another to get into my handbag Grin Thanks for all of your reassurance - it really did help!
