Does anyone have any feel for when not talking starts to be a worry? ds is 19 months and while he mutters a fair amount of jargon from time to time he has yet to utter a single word with meaning ( not even the longed for "mummy" or "daddy" )otherwise he is happy and spends his day running round in a busy fashion. He also holds things up for us to name for him , but never seems to think he could say the name himself...also he seems to be able to hear fine and can follow simple commands like "take your sandals off" or "put that down!"

My uncles ds was a 'late' talker but he's catching up for it now
Don't remember the exact age but he's fine.

It will come, probably very suddenly, your next thread you start will probably read something like.......

Wht cant he just be quiet for five minutes?

hermykne · 02/09/2006 21:06

MICROMUMMY when he starts he'll be gushing it out. dont fret, my first born was quite slow with words but ds now 2 is making sentences, she made up for it

micromummy · 02/09/2006 21:16

my mum also thinks i should be grateful for the silence...

my dd was quite late
she didn't say anything then just before she was 2 came out with a sentence
i want cbeebies and coco pops!!
then there was no stopping her like your ds she knew what you were saying just wouldn't say it herself until she knew she could do itshe has been like that with everyting walking potty training but when she does do it shes perfect
dd is 5 now and is constantly twittering ds 20mths jabbers rubbish to try and compete how i would love less noise!!

Tiggerish · 02/09/2006 21:24

My ds was very similar. it was only a bit after 19 months that he started saying proper words and then he caught up really quickly. Turns out he is a bit of a perfectionist - we think he didn't want to get it wrong so didn't try.

juicychops · 02/09/2006 21:28

my ds is nearly 20mths and has only recently started speaking some words. He had never ever stuck his tongue out until a couple of months ago. Not even when he was a baby. and since then hes started to improve a lot

fattiemumma · 02/09/2006 21:28

dd is 23.2 months and is only this last couple of weeks that she has started to even attempt to speak.

she says maybe 10 words max and of those i doubt anyone outside the family could understand more than 3/4.

i was beggining to get worried so am really relieved that she has started to speak.
he will get there....it may take a while but it'll come

micromummy I have the same worry about my DS who is 22 months old. He chatters all day in a babbling kind of way and sometimes will attempt daddy but no other real recognisable words. It's really hard isn't it, especially when I can hear the little girl next door who is only 2 weeks older communicating in proper sentences.

Sometimes I wonder if I don't talk to him enough or if he watches too much tv etc but he does seem really contented so I guess it's just a waiting game.

Peridot30 · 03/09/2006 22:00

micromummy my dd only started saying few words when 2.6.only been in last month that she has stared talking in sentences (now 2.11) Never shuts up now but so good to be able to have a conversation with her. my son on other hand was very quick to talk and we had started to worry bout dd.

kitbit · 04/09/2006 13:36

could have written your post a couple of months ago! ds is now 22 months and 2 weeks ago discovered that if he makes sounds the same as the ones we do, we understand him and things happen. Seeing the penny drop was wonderful, we'd been feeling just like you! Before that he was understanding loads, and as long as they understand it means they are processing language even if they're not actually producing anything that we can relate to. Now, 2 weeks later, he has about 10 words that he actually knows how to use, and many others that he doesn't remember but that he has copied from us when we say them. He has realised that copying our sounds makes these fab new words and now really listens instead of the old style "half listening, in his own world" thing he used to do.

Don't worry, all of this is normal. Suddenly it will change and you'll wonder why you were previously so worried!

Hi Micromummy both mine were late talkers. DS 2 in July was single words for months and months. Then this summer he talks. Complete paragraphs sometimes. Took DD to school this monring and the other mummies said "He Talks!!"

They each specialise in their own thing -- bet there is something you DS has done before others. For mine it was walking/climbing/running. He'll get there.
