Hungry Baby Formula

Hi - I am new to all of this so apologies for my misuse of the correct acronyms!! But I have a question regarding Hungry Baby Formula.
My DS is now 14 wks, for 12 wks he was exclusively BF but since 12 wks I have started using Aptamil 1 while gradually reducing my BF. We are now down to 1 BF a day (usually the 7am feed) and the rest is formula but he will only go a max of 3 hours between feeds even during the night. He is taking 6oz per feed and won't take much more otherwise he sicks it back up. I don't want to wean him early so was thinking of changing to hungry baby milk, what is everyones experience of this? Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe give a bottle more regularly. Say every 1-2 hrs. I think it's a myth that they can go for 3 hrs between feeds. My DS never did.

Yup 3 hours very normal for that age, doesn't mean extra hungry.

Just try to let him take what he wants, one big bottle won't necessarily mean he's full for longer.

Also think how many hours it is between each meal/snack/drink for adults. . .not sure why we expect babies to go 3/4 hours. Wink

I'd stick with it for now. I've never heard anything good about hungry baby milk. I don't think hv's or dr's generally recommend it. I think you should only be worried about how much he is taking based on weight gain, or rather lack of weight gain.

You've only really just stopped bfing and I think you should give it a couple more weeks for him to adjust and /or get past this possible growth spurt. It's amazing how they manage to time a growth spurt for when other big changes are going on! My ds was feeding 8oz every 3 hrs during the day at that stage but he was a massive kid! He only got to 4hrs much later at 6 months old ish.

There's a book called "my child won't eat" which is a very informative read & one I wish I'd read by your stage. It helped me realise my ds knew what he was doing!

Hungry baby formula is thickened to delay digestion - it doesn't contain anything beneficial as an extra. So, it could actually reduce their calorie intake by causing him to go longer between feeds. If your baby is hungry increase the number of milk feeds per day. The First Steps Nutrition Trust or similar has info on all available formulae but generally recommends infants remain on the stage 1 types.

My DD is 27 weeks and has only just started going 3 hours between feeds. It's perfectly normal I'm afraid!

Three hours is normal at this age. It's only eight feeds a day. I eat/drink far more often than that in a day.

Jaggy - I wish I'd read it before ds was born. I'd have had a much easier time of life. In the event it was about 11 months before I read it! I've totally changed my approach and our lives have been vastly improved. But of a evangelist about it now!

Dd never went three hours between feeds, not until she was weaned onto propr food at 6mo. I gave her hungry baby once and it was a mistake as she got tummy ache and cried a lot. 1st milk is fine my dd stayed on it until 1
