All the online guides are very vague and I was wondering what was normal in your experience for a 2.1 year old?
-How many words can they say?
-Can they use sentences and if so what sort of thing do they say?
-Do they use 'I' or their name when referring to themselves?
-Can they say numbers?
-Can they actually count any things?
-Do they remember things that happened last week and talk about them?

DS has just turned 2. He knows lots of individual words but not many sentences/phrases. He can say 'I don't want it' but words all merge into 'dunwanit'. Even Peppa Pig is a lazy 'pepig' ..hmm..now I think about it, maybe I mumble my words!

His friends of same age can all speak in full sentences, but he can count to 12 and knows lots of colours when they can't. Swings and roundabouts- they all learn differently but get there in the end.

Notfastjustfurious · 28/05/2014 21:07

Dd is 2.1, she does sentences of 3 words mainly a roll call on where everyone is 'where's daddy/mama/granda gone?' The rest of the time she sticks to one word commands 'mama, drink' 'more drink' and 'mama hand outside' she does know all her colours and shapes though. They're all different though so really can't compare them

ThermoLobster · 28/05/2014 21:09

DD2 who is just over 2 said today:

My bum is hanging out.

And it was. Skinny jeans plus nappy is not a good combo!

RabbitSaysWoof · 28/05/2014 21:21

Ds is a May 2012 boy too. He doesnt make sentences yet, seems to repeat the last word of everything you say to him and repetitive random words of the moment (train track/ seaside/ park/ peoples names and the dogs name) asks for water and every food to him is called tato's (potato) or chicken.
he groups everything still too all trains and buses are cho chos, any vehicle with a light on the top is a nee nor anything in the sky birds included are airplanes.

TheBookofRuth · 28/05/2014 21:23

DD is 2.4 and you can have whole conversations with her. She knows a lot of words, including quite a few three-four syllable ones (delicious, fantastic, helicopter, jaguar) and speaks in full sentences ("lots of fun on the train", "mummy going for a wee", to use some example from today). She mostly uses I and me correctly but uses "you" instead of me when frustrated - "give it to you, give it to you!" means she wants you to give it to her!

She can count up to 12 - and actually knows the numbers as she recognises them out of sequence - and knows some letters and what they stand for, though there's no logic to which ones. She's made the occasional attempt at writing her name.

She remembers things she did weeks ago if they interested her, and will suddenly start telling you all about them when they pop into her head.

However, she couldn't stand unaided till 20 months or walk till 22, and her gross motor skills (though not her fine ones) are still behind, so it's swings and roundabouts.

Uptheairymountain · 28/05/2014 21:35

Mine's just turned 2.

She's been speaking in sentences for several months and has come out with 10 / 11 + word gems (not repeating them here because they tend to be narrations of what I'm doing in the loo Hmm).

She can also "read" a few of her favourite stories to me, such as We're Going On A Bear Hunt, The Hungry Caterpillar or The Biggest Kiss. She's pretty much knows all the words to the theme songs of her favourite 8 or so C Beebies and Disney Junior programmes (Balamory, Show Me, Doc McStuffins and so on) and the C Beebies bedtime song.

She can count up to 15.

She doesn't say "me" very often; usually things like "you just want your bath now mum" i.e. I want my bath.

Uptheairymountain · 28/05/2014 21:37

Oops - that post sounds boasty Blush.

She doesn't really know her colours yet though.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 28/05/2014 21:48

DD is just 2.

She has loads of words. No idea how many but easily several hundred. Talks in sentences "drink please mummy" "X have pasta for dinner" simple sentences but strings her words together correctly, will sing sentences of songs eg first 2 lines of twinkle twinkle etc...
Uses her name "X do it" "me do it" "mine" Hmm
Can count to 13 and will sometimes then do 18,19,20. The other numbers don't exist apparently! If we sit and get her to put her finger on things slowly/carefully she will count them.
Knows all her colours and is recognising a few letters and the numbers when written/printed.

She loves books though and will happily sit and be read to constantly so hears a lot of words. I never shut up either Wink

They're all different though.

RubyGoat · 28/05/2014 22:06

DD is 2 & nearly 1 month. She can say sentences, up to 6 words (occasionally). Can say & read numbers up to 10, & this week has learnt letters as far as f (learning at her own pace, she kept bringing us the Mr Pusskins Numbers & Peppa Pig numbers book, & now obsessed with letters).
Doesn't say I but does say me. Understands concept & words for a mirror, pictures & shadows. Can name lots of animals including making their sounds & identifying them from their sounds, can identify several shapes & colours, items of clothing, body parts. Can't count with any certainty yet. No idea on her total vocabulary, we stopped counting a few months ago. She signs (Makaton) as well, too much Mr Tumble I think! We encouraged this at first as she wasn't especially early at talking & had epic tantrums, when she figured out her first sign at about 1, the tantrums stopped, it was like a switch had been flipped.

WeGotThere · 29/05/2014 03:55

Dd is 2 and 2 months. She has too many words to count and understands everything we say. She uses 4word sentences happily and with some concentration and a bit of confusion in word order manages longer ones.

She uses my for I usually - "NO! MY do it mummy" but uses yours correctly as in "it's not yours 'baby brother', it's mine!"

She can 'count' (recite numbers) to 14 then random few teens until 19 20 ( said with great flourish and satisfaction). She will say the numbers while pointing to objects to resemble counting but it isn't. E.g. Yesteray in a standard bun tray apparently there were 13 bun cases, today there may be 9. She also says the days of the week, fills in some blanks in months of year and sings the alphabet song to g confidently then mumbles the rest with some recognisable letters in the right places.

She can remember things that happened in certain places and if asked tell you but no concept it being last week or yesterday etc...

However 2 months ago at her 2 yr review I told the HV I was slightly worried as she didn't seem to be speaking as much as her peers - 2 months has made a lot of difference! This is why guidelines are so vague I suppose, they are all so different and develop in spurts sometimes.

naty1 · 29/05/2014 08:38

23m old
-over 500 words
-y sentences 'what did you do mummy' 'he bumped his head' 'i dont know' 'i popped the balloon' 'who's that?'
-y uses i (except when she hurts herself when says above ..head )
-Can say numbers to about 13.
-actually count a few things, maybe 3
-Does remember things that happened last week but doesnt talk about it.

Coveredinweetabix · 31/05/2014 08:33

DS has just turned two and is at the slower end of the spectrum but still entirely normal. Probably has 200 odd words but only 50 or so would be comprehensible to outsiders. Does do 3 or 4 word sentences when he feels like it. He understands everything but you definitely can't have a conversation with him.

Mine have ranged between virtually mute (DD2) to talking in full entirely comprehensible sentences (DD1 and DD3), with DS taking longer both to be clear in his speech and to talk in sentences (although he was talking in unclear sentences at 2).

Lovelydiscusfish · 31/05/2014 13:04

My dd is 2 and a month, and has been able to speak in sentences for a while ("I really do like that"etc), though does make some grammatical errors (as you might expect). Her vocabulary is very large - I would estimate several hundred words. The HV at her two year check said her speaking was advanced for her age. She knows most main colours, and is just starting to learn shapes. She knows a few letters, not many. She is strangely good at flower identification - don't know why! She can sing some songs and recite most of (bloody) Bear Hunt.
However, in other areas she is not so advanced - she can't count at all really, just says numbers in a fairly random order. She can't get herself dressed as I know some children can at this age. She is not potty trained yet. She can't write or draw anything yet.
It is really interesting to read about the variety of development in the different areas, I think!

Monica101 · 01/06/2014 11:21

DD is 2.0, she can say colours, numbers up to ten, family names, a few other words like shoe, dog, cat etc maybe all in all a vocab of 50 words.

No two words sentences apart from putting no or yes in front of a word.

She actually does not speak much at all though, she was mute until 22 months and doesn't look to be vastly interested in speech yet.

MrsBungle · 01/06/2014 11:29

Ds was 2 last week. He can say simple sentences. He never really says "I" he says "my" instead. So "no, mummy, my do it" if I try to do something for him.

He can count to 6, tries to count to 10 but gets confused after 6!

He doesn't really know colours. Everything is blue apparently!

He is very different to my dd who seemed a lot more advanced than he is
