Hi parents of preschoolers, please help me with a uni assignment. If your were offered the opportunity to have your child's development assessed, would you take it? Why or why not?

Thanks! Thanks

At 12 months and again at 2 years/2.5 years a health visitor comes to the house to assess development. Parent doesn't have to accept, but it is offered.

What specifics were you meaning when you said "assessed"?

If you're child goes to pre - school, nursery or a childminder they're continually assessed using eyfs so why would you need another assessment?

It seems unlikely you would pick up anything that hasn't already been observed.

Sorry I'm not in the UK so didn't know about the health visitor assessment. Why would you, or would you not make use of that opportunity? E.g. because you feel it's intrusive or children cannot be assessed because they develop at their own pace, or on the other hand because you think it's important to know if your child is meeting milestones and intervene early if she isn't. Let's assume for the sake of the question that your child is not assessed by nursery etc. I'm referring to physical, emotional, cognitive and social development assessment.

Who would it be done by? How would the assessment be conducted?

I would always say yes to an opportunity to have my child's development assessed. I think it's valuable to know if there are areas that are below average and also to know if there are areas which are above average.

My ds will have his 18 month check soon, hos last was at 1 year, it feels like a long wait!

The assessment will be done by a psychologist and will involve interviews with and a questionnaire to be completed by the parents as well as direct assessment of the child in an age appropriate manner.
