Rolling over

Hi my dd is nearly 19 weeks old and doesn't roll in either direction despite plenty of tummy time which she doesn't dislike. She is holding her head at 90 degrees when on her tummy and on her back can get to her side and then no further! She is generally a placid contented happy girl should I be worried or is she just a bit of a late developer

I wouldn't worry too much. If you are concerned you could always speak to your HV Smile

DIYandEatCake · 24/05/2014 06:24

I wouldn't worry at all at 19 weeks! Ds (5.5 months) hasn't rolled yet, though he sits unsupported well. Dd (who's 3 now) rolled for the first time at 7-8 months and is perfectly normal (was an early walker too).

NickyEds · 24/05/2014 07:04

Don't worry-DS(22 weeks) only did it yesterday and I'm pretty sure it was entirely by accidentSmile

ApocalypseNowt · 24/05/2014 07:09

19 weeks is not late at all for rolling! If anything it's a wee bit towards the early side.

You say your dd is placid, contented and happy? That's brilliant and lots more important than all these little milestones - try not to get too caught up in it op x

Thank you that has reassured me, she is my first (can you tell!) and I think in am just a worry guts! I'm sure she will do it when she's good and ready but at the moment is happy lying on her tummy babbling away!

Dd2 didn't roll over until she was 10 months old, and not all the way over until she was over 1 - she just had no desire to even try! But when she did finally manage to go back to front at 10 months she then crawled and pulled herself up within a week and was walking 2 months later. It was like she thought hey, I can move, this is handy and just went for it all in one go Grin

HVs aren't worried unless by 9 months they aren't attempting to move about at all, dd2 did this sort of caterpillar manoeuvre from 6 months on her back so that was fine Smile

my DS never rolled except a few times by accident. I was worried and the HV said its not a milestone and some babies never roll but go straight to crawling or walking. He is now 4 and can obviously roll but it wasn't until after he was walking.

jessiemummy28 · 24/05/2014 20:43

My DD is 6 months and has only started rolling front to back this week, despite having been able to sit unaided for a while. She hates tummy time so I don't think she'll ever voluntarily roll back to front! I mentioned it to my GP this week at an appt for something else and he said not to worry at all, babies are naturally rolling later now due to the 'back to sleep' campaign.

newintown2014 · 25/05/2014 18:01

Your dd sounds very similar to mine who also liked tummy time, had good head control from quite early on, yet never seemed to want to roll over (also described as "placid", so perhaps it's a personality thing). When she finally rolled front to back, she was just over six months. Back to front came a couple of weeks later and now at eight and half months she is a proficient crawler, pulling herself up on furniture and starting to cruise! So like Flipflop's daughter once she got the hang of getting around she couldn't stop. Don't worry, your daughter will get there in her own time, though I understand you getting a little worried as I was the same at that stage.

Mirshid · 25/05/2014 19:12

Thank you newintown that is dd to a t has been lifting her head since almost day one and I think that was why I was concerned about the rolling as she seems to be so strong but as you say just not particularly interested in moving yet! I'm sure she will do it when she's good and ready x
