Does anyone have a bum-shuffling DC?

DS2 is 17 months old. He has been bum shuffling since 15 months. He doesn't crawl and can't cruise round furniture or pull himself to standing.

If your DC bum shuffled, how old were they when they started to cruise and walk? Did they pull to standing?

DS2 is hyper mobile, but not alarmingly so. He has some special physio boots (piedro boots) which are meant to help with his standing, but haven't made much difference yet.

DS1 (also hyper mobile) was cruising and taking a few tentative steps by now, but couldn't crawl or shuffle!

Thanks

I had 2!! DS walked at around 20 months, DD2 at 13 months. They both pulled themselves up to standing fairly easily. and I was never tempted to attach a duster to their bums at all

Quite a difference then - thanks!

The paed said he would be closer to 2 when it happened. I find it really hard when we are out and about (at the park for instance) as he really wants to play football with his brother and be up and about, and shuffling isn't really cutting it!

And yes, my kitchen floor is sparkly clean!

DS2 was a bum shuffler. His legs used to go like windscreen wipers Smile
He started off actually getting around quite early (about 8 or 9 months) by literally rolling across the room to get what he wanted. Then he started bum shuffling at about 10 months. He walked at 16-17 months though he had quite a lot of encouragement from nursery - they would line up chairs and try to get him to cruise along them. I read somewhere that bum shufflers walk later as there's no need to walk as they have both hands free to hold stuff (which of course crawlers don't). DS1 crawled then walked - no shuffling - but he was a bit late to do both those things.

I also remember the clean floors and grubby trousers Grin

My dd (first child) bum shuffled. She never crawled, I think she was cruising at about 18 months (she is nine now so a long time ago so quite remember exactly). She walked at just over 20 months. Once she did it, that was it, no wobbling, falling etc she could just do it!

insanityscatching · 21/05/2014 12:45

My dd was a bum shuffler. In the space of a fortnight she learned to stand, cruise, walk, run and climb the stairs. She was eighteen months old and for a while it looked like she was never going to get on her feet but when she did she was surprisingly proficient and within a fortnight there was no discernible difference between her and her cousin who had been walking for months (from 9 months poor dsis)

I was a shuffler walked At 11.5mo DS was a shuffler from 6 mo briefly crawled at 9mo walked at 11mo didn't have hyper mobility though

Guin1 · 21/05/2014 16:22

I was a shuffler and walked at 10mo. DS was born 10 weeks prem. He started bum shuffling at around 10mo (8mo corrected/gestational age) and was very proficient at it. Resisted all attempts to get him to crawl - he couldn't see the point because it meant he couldn't carry things! Started cruising around 13mo (11mo corrected) and walking at 15mo (13mo corrected). He never crawled, still doesn't, which makes getting under coffee tables and through playground tunnels very difficult for him. And once he could walk, there was no more bum shuffling. To be honest, I quite miss it!

My DS bum-shuffled until 29 months Shock when he just started running!

IWillOnlyEatBeans · 23/05/2014 11:23

Thanks for all your replies - it seems like there is a massive variation!

I'm impressed with all of your hands-free shufflers - DS2 uses at least one, often two if he needs to get somewhere really quickly!

Good to hear that once it clicks, it should fall into place quite quickly.

Yes 2 of my 3 were but but shuffelers and not of them even the crawler walked till they were 18mnth and neither did their dad or their cousins on their dad's side. We on my side all crawled and walked before we were 1

ILoveCoreyHaim · 23/05/2014 11:27

Stupid auto correct.

Asleeponasunbeam · 24/05/2014 07:48

Mine both were and so were both DN's (my brother's DC). They walked at 14, 16, 15 and 19 months. All loved carrying stuff and having their heads up so they could talk non stop.

kalidasa · 24/05/2014 08:09

Yes DS is a bum shuffler! He started shuffling when he was about 8 or 9 months; was super quick, totally handsfree (and hilarious) by 11 or 12. He didn't pull up to standing until about 13 months, and he didn't walk until 16 months, but once he started to walk he "got it" really quickly and went from a couple of steps to walking everywhere/carrying things/squatting and standing again etc within a couple of weeks. Apparently this is pretty typical for later walkers. Now at nearly 18 months he walks almost exclusively but if he does move around on the floor he still shuffles rather than crawls. I found a really reassuring book about infant development that said you don't need to worry about non-walking until 2 if they are bottom shufflers.

melliebobs · 24/05/2014 08:11

Dd started bum shuffling at 13 months. Started walking at 22 months. But think she's a bit backwards I'm coming forwards. She's 2.2 now and still not very adventurous. Doesn't climb etc and not confident walking outside

voodoochimp · 24/05/2014 08:14

My bum shuffler walked at 12 months.

FloellaDaVille · 24/05/2014 08:15

My DD2 was a bum shuffler. We have wooden floors and it was very quick for her to get about. She walked at 18 months when we were staying at my in laws who have carpets! I think the friction got too much for her!

ThreeLannistersOneTargaryen · 24/05/2014 08:39

I had two of each.

Crawler: walked at 15m.
Hypermobile bum-shuffler: walked at 22m.
Crawler: walked at 19m.
Bum-shuffler with GDD: walked at 24m.

A decade on, you cannot tell which was which.
