Room thermometers for nurseries - newborns

moomin35 · 16/05/2014 15:20

I've bought a room thermometer for my soon to be newborn. Trouble is it only has a small window which it considers the best temperature for the baby so can often read as being too cold or too warm. Does anyone use these in reality and adhere to the exact temperature or are they just unnecessary baby kit?

I have a thermometre in my monitor and just use it as a general guideline for what clothes to put on e.g vest + sleepsuit or just vest or just sleepsuit...

The room is usually between 20 and 22 degrees which in theory is too warm, but i only worry if it gets to 25 plus in the summer

my dd was born in January so she was bigger when i worried about heat...

What's the window? You can dress them accordingly. I've always used this

Oh, I don't know. I understand new mums worry about everything and want to be told how to do everything by and "expert" but really don't you just know when it's too hot/cold for your baby? Or when they need a cardi/blanket and when they don't?

I have one in my baby monitor.
Ive found it more useful in winter (as DD seems cold blooded like me)
Useful though in summer as a gauge to when to open nursery window

I never used one, we just felt the back of his neck to see if he was too hot or cold and removed or added layers.

I wouldn't bother with one. I soon learned what temperature he's comfortable with and I either feel down his back if I think maybe he's too warm, and generally just put him in one more layer than I'm wearing.
It's a lovely thing actually; because you spend almost every minute with them, you learn so quickly how they are most comfortable, and it soon becomes second nature to just make little adjustments all the time.

I do have a wall thermometer, I just never feel the need to look at it.

We got a Gro-egg when DS was born under the ORDERS of the mw (she was very insistent!) and went slowly mad obsessively watching it-"It's red!!" it's red!!"Grin. We ended up with me in pjs snuggled under the duvet and DS with one cellular blanket gently draped over him, waking up every 10 minutes. It's ok for reassurance in the beginning but now we use ours as a really dim nightlight-it's better to learn yourself what your baby needs.

Rodent worry too much about the temperature of the nursery. They should sleep in the same room as you for the first 6 months Smile
