peg jigsaws - what next?!

My DD is almost 18 months and absolutely loves the wooden peg jigsaws. We have 8 different ones, and she can do them all. Both her grandparents have several more and she can do all these too. In the interest of my own sanity (she doesn't like to do much else at moment if we are in) I wonder what the next step is puzzle wise? She's too young for proper jigsaws - is there an inbetween type puzzle that would challenge her a bit without being too frustrating? We have a few shape sorter type toys which she can also do quite quickly.

More complex wooden jigsaws which have several pieces to go in one hole?

ilovepowerhoop · 04/05/2014 20:36

this?

Floor puzzles, wooden letter or number grids, simple wooden backed puzzles or the ones where you get a 6, 9 and 12 piece in one box (separate them to begin with then later she can sort them), or stacking shape sorter like this

thanks powerhoop that looks fun!

Would something like this be too hard for her age?

Orchard Toys do a range of 'proper' puzzles for 18 months +. DD has just started trying to figure them out. We have Jungle, Farmyard, Pets and Transport. They are just 2 pieces to complete each figure.

the one you linked to says 18+ months so should be ok

thank you for all your excellent help. She is obsessed with these things, all other toys have been cast aside for the last month!

I agree with orchard toys suggestion. Our dds absolutely loved the two and three piece ones and now still love jigsaws. Good thing about orchard toy ones is they stand up to some chewing as well!

Does it have to be puzzle based? My DD loves peg puzzles, shape sorters etc too, she was recently given this for her birthday and loves it www.elc.co.uk/on/demandware.store/Sites-ELCENGB-Site/default/mSearch-Show?q=Pop+it+in+the+post&simplesearch=Go
The game can change as they get older too. Just a suggestion as a change from puzzles Grin

I was going to suggest the Orchard 2-piece puzzles as well. They are lovely and bright and very good quality. Making a simple picture by joining two, and then three pieces, is the natural progression from the puzzles you are using. I would especially recommend the animal ones, such as the pets, farm animals and jungle - your little girl won't be able to resist doing these and there are several puzzles in each box! The Orchard range is absolutely delightful and there are many others for her to enjoy, as she progresses.

DD is the same, she went from peg jigsaws to little two- and four-piece ones (we had a lovely textured one about the numbers and seasons from M&S). We trawled local charity shops and garden centre (weirdly) and found loads of 4-12-24 piece ones as she got older and better. We also got some number, letter and animal wooden ones. It's really hard though as most of them are made of cardboard and aimed at children who know better than to eat the pieces! Now at 2.7, though she can do 45+ piece puzzles without help, and without chewing the pieces Grin
