Help please-aptamil follow on milk!

Hi all,

This is on behalf of a friend of mine (I promise!). She has discovered she has given her 6 week old son the follow on version of aptamil in error. He has been drinking it for the last couple of days and she's heartbroken that she's bought the wrong one by mistake and is worried about the repercussions! Any ideas about the differences and why it's only suitable for 6 months plus would be gratefully received to put her mind at ease!

Thank you so much in advance!

No difference except I believe the follow on has slightly more iron. Tell her not to worry!

I think (and I'm not 100% sure on this but it makes sense) that there is little or no difference but that as the govt steer is to promote breast feeding for six months they market the same product in two ways.

You can't earn clubcard points (or boots/nectar points etc) on new born milk. Nor can they advertise it or offer money off vouchers. Six months is different though.

Make sense?

Even if there is a difference in the formula, I'd say it is minimal and unlikely to harm him.

It has to be different to get round the marketing rules, and the first stage has to be the best they can do, so follow-on will always be worse IYSWIM.

On the other hand, it is only fractionally different so she won't have harmed him - dodgy nappies maybe.

Chuck the tin away now she's noticed, and get back on proper baby milk.

The iron might have made him slightly constipated.

He'll be fine, just switch back, bet he didn't even notice Smile

Nevertalks has got it, because of the push to breastfeed for 6 months they can't advertise formula for babies under 6 months. But you can make up a new label, call it follow on milk and say "when your ready to move on from breast feeding". It's much the same ingredients and I wouldn't worry.
