My son is coming up for 3.5 and is still refusing to use any kind of potty or toilet. I need help!!!! We have been trying for about a year to get him to to even tell us when he needs a wee/poo but he just goes.I have tried without nappies for about 4 days recently and he still just did not seem to have any sensation before he did anything and then got upset when he was dirty. Should I go to the doctors or just persevere. Don't want to make it a major issue but it is getting that way with us. Please help if you can.

Firstly I haven't got children I'm pregnant, but my sister and friends have. All the boys were a lot later at potty training then girls. Around 3/4 so don't panic your not alone, just few ideas may help.
One friend made the bathroom a cool place posters, toys favourite game all in a box, you then explain when you do a wee on potty/ toilet you can take one of the toys to play with.

You can buy these ball things that go in the loo and boys pee on them ur husband n him could do this, if daddy does it.

Or bribery ( my niece ) if she goes she's allowed one choc button, I know your not meant to bribe but hey it works, and she learnt the quickest she's not even 3 yet.

Maybe leave it for week or two then start again, my sil thought she'd never get her boy dry and was at the end of her tether eventually though around4yrs he was fine, he may just not b ready all little uns are different.goid luck x

Routine and reward are your friends. Stick him on the potty or toilet at certain times during the day, and a) reward him for sitting on it for a certain length of time and b) give an extra reward if he does something. Don't stress if he doesn't. It will come. How often do you see a 10 year old in nappies??
Does he go to any kind of pre-school or nursery? Watching other kids of a similar age use the toilet might help.
It might also help if you get him one of those little toilet seats that fit on a big seat (if you haven't already). Take him with you to chose it.

Hi there, ah yes welcome to my world! DS is 3.5 and seems to get really embarrassed about the poo side of things. He will wee in the potty and today for the first time did sit on the loo with one of those inserts to make it smaller (Pourty Flexi Fit toilet trainer) and the step up (Pourty Step up stool) to rest his feet on - only way we managed it was to give him the ipad! I dont care how we do it quite frankly - as long as we do it so I am all about bribes on this one.
If we leave his nappy off he will go to the potty if he needs to go
but not for a poo. I plan to go cold turkey this weekend and put him in cotton padded training pants ('Bright Bots' - spenny tho' grr!) with a timer set to 30 minute reminders . Nappy branded training pants are no good as they feel too much like nappies. Its also a good idea to get him in the bathroom when you and dad are going so he can see the whole process, needs lots of language around it all too. Lots of praise when he goes and a simple ' oh dear potty /toilet next time' when he has an accident. We are ordering some more books too 'Liam goes poop' is supposed to be good, as is 'wheres the poop' - if there are any words you dont normally use, just substitute . When you go out, to avoid accidents you should put on cotton pants and then a nappy over it so that he still feels wet. Rule is try to go to the loo every 30 mins. You will need a portable potty ('My Carry Potty') to take out with you and one of those loo reducers ('Cushie traveler toilet training seat') which folds up into a handy bag to also train him to use a normal loo when out. better to get him straight onto a normal sized loo as quickly as possible really...
