Hi

My DD is nearly 7 yrs old and is constantly sucking her thumb. We have tried a couple of suggestions from friends but i am now getting desperate for any other suggestions.

My dd just stopped one day when she was about 7. She said later that it was time to stop. Plenty of will power.

Interesting this. Did you use a dummy. We have for both dds, and neither suck a thumb (took dummy off dd1 when she was 11 mths old-never occurred to her to use her thumb).

I went to uni with a girl who still sucked her thumb at 18 (!!) - in bed at night (I shared a room)

My friends (more PC than me) never used dummies and all their kids suck their thumbs.
Don't know what the answer is..might grow out of it but I don't know how. Perhaps other kids teasing??...which is hard, but I think most kids' behaviours are governed by this.

I used to be a thumb-sucker. I used to refuse a dummy apparantly, even dipped in honey, etc. I just stopped one day when I was about 11 - i think i was embarrassed at secondary school. I still did it at night though for a few more years. She will decide herself oneday.

Why do you want her to stop?

I had a chronic thumb sucker and tried EVERYTHING. It used to drive me crazy cos I could see his teeth were starting to stick out. The problem was he did manage to stop in the day time but night time was a different story. I did the yukky tasting stuff, and socks, and sticker charts, and bribes (I mean incentives :P). I even went online and showed him what would happen to his teeth if he continued. Mean I know but I was desperate. Anyway, in my search online I found this ... www.thumbguard.com.au. It seemed kinda pricey but when I thought about how much I had already spent on stuff to try to stop it, not to mention the emotions both he and I had spent, and I was desperate. I figured it seemed the least traumatic so I just went ahead and bought it and OMG it worked! He only wore it at night cos day wasn?t a problem, and within a month he didn?t need or want to suck his thumb anymore. Even better I can see a difference in his teeth structure.

Now if only there was something I could buy to get rid of his other annoying habits :P

Good luck!
