My dd is quite a hungry toddler and eats well. at the moment she is hungry all morning. She has a weetabix and half a piece of toast with marmite, and has 5 oz milk when she gets up. An hour later she is asking for more food and today I've already had to give her another half a piece of toast. she has a banana mid morning and a good lunch by 12pm. She is less hungry in the afternoon. She might have a few rice cakes but will then wait for her dinner.

My.question is am I not giving her enough for breakfast? What do other children this age have? she is a big child, off the chart for height and 91 foe weight so worried I'm not giving her enough but also conscious of

Too big portions

My 15 month old only has a small slice of toast or a crumpet and a beaker of milk, so I guess it must be very much down to the individual. She eats like a horse at other times.
She also needs a snack mid morning but she wouldn't eat any more breakfast if I offered it I don't think.

HandragsNGladbags · 10/04/2014 08:38

My dd's always filled up on Weetabix, DD2 has been known to polish off 4 in one sitting Shock

But it's good for her, it's not like she is mainlining sugar puffs so I don't worry.

Both of my DD's liked a big breakfast and then weren't as bothered in the day. I also give them scrambled egg with beans or sausage if I have the time and inclination, or porridge.

HandragsNGladbags · 10/04/2014 08:39

If it makes any difference DD1 was 91/98th for weight and height, DD2 was 99.6th for both.

cheekyfunkymonkey · 10/04/2014 08:40

She sounds like my dd! A Weetabix, fruit and glass of milk, then scavenging toast etc a bit later.

TinkerbellTrains · 10/04/2014 08:45

At that age we stuck to the more filling breakfast such as eggs or porridge as cereal & toast just didn't fill them up enough (still doesn't)

So scrambled egg with ham, cheese & chopped cherry tomatoes follows by natural yoghurt & berries (frozen) or omelettes with mixed veg and a banana or dippy poached eggs and toast soldiers with a small apple/grapes or porridge made with whole milk/almond milk with homemade mixed fruit purée. These kept them fuller for longer and they rarely had a mid morning snack unless we were at home. That would be a small biscuit or small piece of cake or flapjack if I'd done any baking that week with a small cup f milk.

I offer small portions and let them ask for more rather than give them too big a portion and they waste it.

DS 16mo eats an adult sized bowl of ready brek and a banana. So it could be that 1 weetabix isn't enough? Offer 2 and see how it goes

slightlyconfused85 · 10/04/2014 09:15

Ok thanks all. Based on this it looks like I could give her a bit more, glad to hear of other hungry toddlers, sometimes I think she's a bit of a machine! I might try porridge is it more filling than weetabix?

Funny. DS2 is a dainty eater in the morning and much hungrier in the afternoon. His breakfast today has been about 8 blueberry wheats and he might have half a banana and some grapes at about 11. Lunch at 1pm and tea at 5pm will be two full sized meals, plus probably an apple, some rice cakes, breadsticks etc in between them.

My kids are the ones at playgroup who completely ignore the snack table at 10.30 full of all sorts of goodies and just have a beaker of juice Confused

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 10/04/2014 09:32

My 16month old could eat weetabix til it was coming out of her ears!
She has 1-2 most days with a glass of milk and a bit of fruit.
Other days we have:

Brioche eggy bread
Yoghurt mixed with oats and raisins
Scrambled eggs
Ham, cheese, cherry tomatoes
Jam on toast

She doesn't have a mid morning snack but will eat well at lunch, will has a yoghurt to something at four and then dinner at 6.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 10/04/2014 09:36

Porridge -either made properly with oats or Ready brek with fruit puree in - seems to really fill mine up.
Banana
Then if STILL hungry, toast or crumpets. Sometimes with a bit of cream cheese rather than something sweet for more protein.

minipie · 10/04/2014 10:05

DD has about 4-5oz milk
Then ready brek with fruit puree - about 5 tablespoons. Sometimes some fruit as well if she's still hungry.
Then mid morning more milk and a snack
then a big lunch

Porridge ought to be more filling than weetabix because oats are slow release energy whereas wheat is faster (more like sugar iyswim) so porridge ought to last longer. I've never actually compared though!

mummyxtwo · 10/04/2014 11:16

My dd2 is 17.5mo and also eats a big breakfast. She has 7.5oz milk when she gets up, and about half an hour later she'll have breakfast of either porridge with raisins, or a bowl of cheerios, or a weetabix, with a slice of buttered toast. She'll eat maybe half the toast but polish off a good sized bowl of cereal. Sometimes she'll eat a bit of banana too but seems to have gone off that for breakfast and now often has it as a mid morning snack. Mid morning she'll usually have half a banana and a little carton of raisins, then lunch at about 1pm. Porridge does seem to keep her going better than other cereals.

neversleepagain · 10/04/2014 19:30

My DD's are 18 months and this is what they have for breakfast...

Porridge oats and fruit (a kiwi or cut up grapes or strawberries and blueberries)
Toasted fruit loaf slice and fruit
Scrambled eggs and toast and fruit
Toasted crumpet and fruit

Water to drink

HeyMicky · 10/04/2014 19:37

DD (19 months) has either porridge or a handful of mini wheats signed in milk, then a fromage frais, some fruit (1/3 banana or a handful of blueberries) and either half a slice of eggy bread or a few strips of omelette. Plus a little milk to drink and some very diluted OJ. If she then eats nothing else all day I've covered off fruit, dairy, protein and carbs

curiousuze · 10/04/2014 19:44

DS (16 months) has bf milk - so don't know how much - then cereal with milk, blueberries, a banana and toast. Then will either have a second breakfast at nursery followed by mid morning snack and two course lunch, or have a second breakfast with DH when he comes in from night shift (daddy means food!). He is very very tall and sturdy though.

naty1 · 10/04/2014 21:21

I have given DD porridge from about 14m i was finding other things leave her hungry (though she is going off it a bit now)
And sometimes toast
She also then has cup of milk (never drinks all of it)
Midmorning box of raisins/biscuit

I think wheetabix is GI

I have to use adult size bowl for porridge or it boils over in microwave

Bedsheets4knickers · 11/04/2014 20:29

Shreddies or toast

beccajoh · 11/04/2014 20:34

At 18 months DD would eat half a sachet of quick cook porridge, or a crumpet with butter and marmite, and some fruit.

LokiTheCynicalCat · 11/04/2014 21:32

My 18mo has 5-6ozs of milk first thing. Then an hour or so later either a single weetabix with milk or a sachet of Oats-so-Simple porridge (plain not flavoured or sweetened) made with full fat milk. If he's still hungry he will have a banana. He's rarely hungry after the porridge, he can't finish it all most of the time but the servings are small enough that I'm happy to give a full sachet each time.

And I offer crackers/breadstick at about 10.30 with water. Lunch is at 1pm but I don't do puddings with it. Like PP have said, he seems to eat more early on and less in the afternoon/evening.
