9 month old screaming during nappy change - any tips?

My 9 month old is starting to get really tricky to change. He won't sit still and hasn't for a couple of months but I had figured out how to deal with the wriggling using distractions (toys, singing) and letting him sit or kneel for bits of the process but he is now starting to scream the second he knows that it is nappy time and my distraction attempts fail miserably. He also arches and kicks and I just cannot change him on my own when he does this.

Is this a phase and how long does it last?
Any tips on how to deal with this?

He also arches when he is meant to go in the car seat and won't sit in the bath. I am hoping it is just because he recently learned to crawl properly and pull himself up on things so sitting still is too boring. Driving me slightly nuts though.

My 9 month old is exactly the same so I hope it is a phase.

She will not lie down, as soon as I lie her on her back to change her she flips over and shes off like a shot. Same with dressing her, it's a battle and takes a while.

Ive resorted to changing her nappy while she is on all fours, it's tricky especially when it's a dirty nappy but I've got the hang of it nearly and it's a bit easier.

Distraction worked for a while but not any more.

I also find dressing her on my knee makes things a lot easier too

I have tried changing nappies when he is crawling but I am so crap at it! Guess I just need to practise. Good to know it isn't just my little monkey!

Try offering an empty baby wipe packet. It's like previous treasure!

mrsbug · 09/04/2014 20:10

I started using pull ups so dd didn't need to lie down for wees.

For poos I lay her down under one of those wooden baby gyms which usually keeps her quiet for a few minutes.

Clothes peg. Love handling it

On goodness my DD is doing this too! It's a nightmare trying to change a nappy, so stressful! I just hope she grows out of it quickly

DS has been like this since 9mo and is now 16mo...and it's harder now he can walk!

The only way I can change him on my own is to sit on the floor in front of him, lie him down and then quickly throw my leg over his torso and basically pin him to the floor with my thigh...!! He screams the house down but he cannot move. And I just do it as quickly as I can.

I also now only chang him mornings and evenings, and when he poos. No wet nappy changes in this house any more :-S

His skin is fine and never sore though.

I can't wait to potty train him.!

Oh and I use my hypnobirthing breathing techniques (!) to try to stay calm...

My dd did as op when she was 9mth and still does to an extent now at 17mth but I found 'stuff she shouldn't have' work well like my phone, purse, tv remote, etc the novelty is enough of a distraction and pull ups make it easier during the day as she can stand up to put them on especially when were out thats the worse time on those changing wall mounted things

BertieBotts · 10/04/2014 16:22

Can he stand up yet? If so, pull ups!! They are not designed for potty training any more, they are as absorbent as normal nappies.

For poos I used to take the nappy off with DS standing in the bath and hose him down with the shower head.

But yes sometimes you just need to sit on them and do it as quickly as possible.

BertieBotts · 10/04/2014 16:24

For car seat, straps vvv loose, arms in, done up, tickle him, pull tight while he's floppy. Done!

ArtFine · 10/04/2014 16:45

How do you clean them with pull ups? As in do they come off like normal nappies?

BertieBotts · 10/04/2014 16:48

Depends on the brand. Huggies ones have velcro at the sides so they come off like normal ones, Pampers don't, but you can rip the sides if you need to.

I never really bothered to clean that much with wees, you can still give them a quick wipe. With poo like I said I hosed him down in the bath which he loved. It's possible to do it standing up but you will get chunks of poo falling everywhere, really not recommended.

wightjellybaby · 10/04/2014 19:20

I get dd to stand on the nappy mat with an old terry nappy on it too then any accidental wee or poops soak in and the terry goes in wash job done, thays after ive chased her round yhe room for ages first

Thanks for the tips!
