39+2 baby only weighed 5lb10oz how normal?

DS2 born last week at 39+2 by elective section after traumatic birth with dd1. He was expected to be around 7lbs but was only 5lbs 10/2.6kg. I'm feeling really panicky that he is at risk of more complications or will never catch up on size. Does anyone know how ab/normal this is and what his chances of growing are? I was never offered an extra growth scan, even though now looking at it my measurements were on the small side, mw reassured me they were normal but when I got to hosp for the section first thing they told me was that I was small for dates. Feeling a bit emotional about it all.

Growth scans only ever give an estimate and can be quite far off the mark. I was told at 39 weeks that DD was going to be well over 10lbs, but she was just over 9lbs, just like DS.

Are you quite small? Have other members of your family had babies who were smallish at birth? I think 5-6lbs is still very much within the normal range - certainly my sister had two babies, full term, who were only just over 6lbs; one is now a 5'10 adult, the other is a normal-tallish child. My sister-in-law had two DCs under 6lbs, one is now a 5'7 teenage girl, the other is a normal-sized early teen boy. No developmental problems.

Congratulations.
My DS was born 5lb 120z. 39+6. I only has a 12 week scan, so a surprise that he was so small. Please don't worry, it is not an abnormal weight. My son grew quickly in the first few months, and is now 6'3" and size 12 feet!!
Sometimes big babies 10lbs + have lots of difficulties. Big isn't alwas best, sometimes perfection comes in tiny bundles.
Just feed lots.

KaFayOLay · 08/04/2014 10:53

I'm a 5lb 11oz baby, now a fully grown normal adult, I had a 6lber who was always smallest in her primary class but now she has reached 11, she has shot up and is now of average height for her age.
My nephew too was the same weight as me, he's 6ft and entirely normal.
There was never any question that either of us would be anything other than normal.

Is there something else, other than weight, that is concerning you?
I really don't see it as that small.

Crosseyedcat · 08/04/2014 11:47

I was born at 39 weeks and at 5lb exactly. I am perfectly fine (as far as I know :-)

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/04/2014 11:51

DS1 was 6lb 1oz at 38+2, he's now at the top of the centiles for weight and height at 2.6 and caught up very quickly after a few weeks (growth scan said he was going to be nearly 10lbs).

DS2 was 4lb 8oz at 35 weeks (growth scan showed him at below 10th centile) and has now a good size at 9 months and in 6-9 and 9-12 clothes (7.5 adjusted).

I thin

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 08/04/2014 11:52

I think they catch up pretty quickly most of the time.*

IHaveAFifthSense · 08/04/2014 11:53

DD was also 39+2 and only weighed 5 lbs 2oz. Doctors weren't concerned and HV saw that she was growing at expected rate in accordance with her percentile. She's a healthy weight now, a few years on. I wouldn't worry.

Boudica1990 · 08/04/2014 11:59

Congratulations :)

Fear not, my brother was 5lb 1 newborn at 40weeks bang on due date of Christmas day (much to my mother's annoyance) he is now 6ft 3 and a broad shouldered heavy framed man, no development issues just stubborn as a mule!!, I was 4lb 7 and 2 weeks late I'm now 5ft 2 and a healthy size 10(when not pregnant).

Sometimes babies are small but grow just fine. I think mine will be a small baby even though dad is over 6ft and broad athletic build (I'm hoping anyway hah)

Pickles79 · 08/04/2014 12:00

My DS was 5lb10oz
Perfectly healthy 12 year old now :)

Lozcat86 · 08/04/2014 13:29

My DD was 4lb 6oz born by EMCS at 37 weeks, she had a few issues with blood sugar levels and was in NICU for 3 weeks. Now 23 weeks old and 14lb 2oz, your DS will soon catch up
Thanks

Jellyandjam · 08/04/2014 14:16

Both my children were tiny babies born full term and perfectly healthy. DD was 40+5 and she weighed 5lb 9 oz and DS was 40+6 and weighed 5lb 7 oz. They are now 9 and 5 years old and completely average size, no real health problems at all. They told me that I just made small babies.

NickyEds · 08/04/2014 14:30

DS is 15 weeks and was born weighing 6lb 5oz- he was predicted to be around 8-81/2 but he has a big head!!- 98 per centile so I think that they might measure head and predict from there. At 6lb 5 he was quite tiny but shot up the centiles and is almost on the 50th centile already.Try not to worry. Congratulations!

Poshers · 08/04/2014 21:32

My boy was 5Ibs 15oz and 39 + 3 ... he's perfect xx

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 09/04/2014 11:04

Dd was 6lbs1 at 39+5, 9th centile but was up to 'average' height/weight by 1 year. In Scotland they don't estimate weight in scans so I had no indication she was small even though I had a few extra scans towards the end due to lack of movement

ArtFine · 09/04/2014 11:13

My DD was 5 lb 12oz at 39+5, so I know how you may be feeling.

Everyone at the hospital kept commenting on how tiny she was, and it was only when the curtains were opened and I saw other babies, who looked Huge in comparison did I understand why they were making these remarks. I was also not expecting it as I was a big baby, but I learnt later that ALL the babies on my inlaws side were tiny, so it was genetic.

Anyhow, nothing to worry about. DD is catching up weight wise and developmentally seems spot on.

Trooperslane · 09/04/2014 15:56

Another one agreeing. dd born at 40+0 and was 5lb 4oz.

She's nearly 8 months and coming up for 15lbs.

I'm 5'3 and a size 10.

Congratulations OP.

CecilyP · 09/04/2014 16:30

My friend's DS, born the day he was due, was 5lb 14 at birth and by 6 months weighed a whopping 24lb. I don't think you have any cause for concern at all - your DS will grow to be the size he should be. He is currently at the lower end of what is considered a healthy weight, so on 9 to 10th percentile, so please don't worry.

laura2323 · 09/04/2014 16:33

Dd born at 38+6 at 6lb 4oz, now 24 weeks and 17lb.
I was induced due to SPD and the MWs thought she was going to be 10lb! Which I was panicking about because I was 10lb 5 born!

laura2323 · 09/04/2014 16:34

Sorry posted too soon!
It's a pretty normal weight and I'm sure your lo will "catch up" in no time!

MrsMarigold · 09/04/2014 16:37

My two were both 5lb 15oz then both lost over 10% of their body weight because of tongue tie and poor latching. Now DS is almost three and tall and very strong but has always been on the skinny side and DD aged 18 months is also tall, skinny but fine and very active. Both eat well but are slow eaters.

Lamu · 09/04/2014 16:46

My 6lb 4 Dd born at 38 weeks was a little bit skinny and long but by 8/10 weeks filled out massively. She was super chubby with delicious thigh and wrist creases. She's now 2 and the size of a 4 year old! They all catch up eventually, if you're still concerned please speak to your health visitor. I know a lot of people don't agree with them but I've found them fab.

Strokethefurrywall · 09/04/2014 16:51

Fret not, 3 week old DS2 was 6lbs when he arrived and only 46cm but both DH and I were in the mid 6lb range when we were born.
DS1 was 6lb 5oz, dropped to 5lb 10oz and took over 3 weeks to get back to his birth weight, but DS2, despite dropping to 5lb 8oz had shot up to 6lb 8oz only a week after birth. Now he's 7lb 10oz and clearly boob obsessed.

Low weight really doesn't mean anything in an otherwise uncomplicated pregnancy. All my siblings and I were small babies, my niece was 5lb 10oz when she was born and ironically we come from a very tall family! I'm 5ft 8", my sister is 5ft 10" - DM was only 5lb when she was born, she blames her Indian heritage!

Please don't worry, some people just give birth to small babies. Enjoy it, one of the bonuses is that they stay in newborn clothing a little longer Smile
