Toddler eating cot

As above really, my DS (18m) keeps gnawing on the sides and corners of his wooden cot. He doesn't eat the wood as far as I can tell, but spits out the shards. I'm worried he will hurt his mouth on a splinter etc and I'd like to find a way to stop him doing it.

Any suggestions?

Why is he in his cot awake for long enough to bite through the wood?

Boglin · 07/04/2014 15:24

He's not biting through it, he's gnawing bits off it, I don't leave him in there like a feral animal trying to bite his way out! Grin It's usually as I go in to get him up and I'm getting his clothes for the day out, or occasionally he wakes up as I'm getting ready for work so he is awake for a few minutes before I go in to get him.

Interesting point though, perhaps I should get his clothes ready the night before, it's not especially practical but if it stops the wood-biting then I'll give it a go!

good source of fibre.

Funnyfoot · 07/04/2014 15:37

We had a wooden bed end and when DS1 was a PFB we used to have him in bed with us on a morning for cuddle time so we could sleep longer. The teeth marks are still in the end of the bed where he would gnaw at it!

I wouldn't worry too much as I am sure cot manufacturers account for feral babies when they decide on suitable materials Grin

Would something like this help?

Thanks noble, think I'll have to get something like that, it won't solve the corner issue but it might put him off trying!

Funnyfoot and Pirate, I'd like to think you're right!

Is he teething. Did also liked a good chomp on her cot too

cakeymccakington · 07/04/2014 15:55

i had one like this. my cot was pretty much pristine still after ds1 and ds2, bar the odd scrape here and there.
then there was ds3. the cot-eater :-/

he has never tried to eat his bed, interestingly.

i would try just making some kind of cover to go over the parts he chews perhaps?

Goblinchild · 07/04/2014 15:55

DD did this: cot, stretchers on chairs and tables, occasional shoes if she fancied them. She's fine. Smile

Boglin · 07/04/2014 16:10

I think he is teething Anya, he's only got incisors and back molars to come through now but I thought I saw a hint of incisor recently so it could be that. I'll try wrapping the bars in some sheets tonight and see if that helps. He doesn't do it all the time so may take a week or so to discover if it has worked.

He is also a shoe-chewer, I have to take them off him when we get in the car for this very reason! Grin

Oh no, DD never chewed her own shoes. Preferably the very expensive footwear of visiting female friends. Italian, Parisian...

Ah, a girl with a taste for the finer things in life, eh? Grin

Sadly, now she's a student, she shops at primark and charity establishments. I'm sure she remembers the taste of quality though.
